Gutted to hear about Kris Kristofferson passing away. Impossible to overstate the impact he had on me personally and as a writer. This is one of the last photos that I took of him down in the lower mainland back in 2010. I will never forget meeting him back in 1975 backstage at a Gordon Lightfoot concert in Edmonton nor any of the times we spent hanging out at concerts and festivals all over North America. The kindness he and the whole band showed to a young 17 year old songwriter and guitar picker on that first night afforded me the first time that I felt like I actually belonged, surrounded by other creative people and welcomed into that whole family that led to so many friendships and encounters and hangs. Stephen Bruton is gone. So is Donnie Fritts. Johnny's gone now as is Waylon. Tony Joe White, Tina Turner, Gerry McGee.... Hundreds of more great musicians that I got to know, hang out with, open for or play with due to Kris being as generous as he was to me. Feeling my mortality deeply today, but buttressed by the deep respect I feel for this man, his humanity, and his gifting.

Love to Lisa and all the kids. Also to Rita and to all that he touched so deeply. You all have my heart and I extend my absolute deepest condolences to all his family, friends, and fans. Thank you, Kris, for everything you created, you gave, and you did. A legend among legends. Blown away to have called you a friend. I'm going to have to sit with this news for awhile to fully take it in. Love deeply people, and freely.

More than just fashion forward by matching the colour of his drum sticks to his shirt, Al Webster knows how to provide a groove. It was all there, great fills, drum patterns with solid groove, lots of energy to keep Crystal Shawanda's tunes up and in your face.

Well, nobody gets to go off on blistering guitar solos unless there's somebody laying down some deep bottom end. Rob Becker did that and then some behind Crystal Shawanda and underneath Dewayne Strobel flurries of tasty notes wrapped up in all kinds of tone and attitude.

Just how far up that Tele neck was Dewayne Strobel taking that slide of his!?!? The lad can definitely play a little. Some serious country blues shredding going on behind Crystal Shawanda on opening night. That whole trio knew how to lay it down and make a statement. Thanks for the sweet playing and the generous hang.

Ah man, always so good to hear Graham Ord play. The depth of his songs is matched only by the depth of the man's heart.

For me, there's nothing better than a great surprise, musically speaking. Graham Ord sliding in to Barn Owl Brewing on Sunday afternoon provided one such joy bomb. He is such a humble human being at the same time as being a very good songwriter and even better guitarist. The full to capacity loft at The Barn hung on every word he spoke or sang, breaking their silence only to explode in applause and vocal outbursts expressing their excitement about what Graham had just delivered.

Thank you Barn Owl for bringing such a great local artist in to share his gift with his and your audience on the weekend.

It was good to see Nico Boesten out playing again, this time with Joshua Smith at The Curious Cafe. The smile on his face suggests he may have been enjoying himself.

Not something that I usually find myself shooting, but had to head out to the airport to grab a few shots of this 1943 Spitfire airplane that is flying around the world this summer and fall. Thinking about my dad, who served in the RCAF during WW II, and all my other relatives that served during that and other times of war and peace.

Met a most delightful young woman at the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Festival last weekend. The sheer look of joy on her face shows just how much she was enjoying Tonye Aganaba and her band. Thanks, Charlie Smith, for allowing me to capture your essence and share this pic.
