There is something so special about getting to watch a family grow through photographs.

To meet them when they are expecting, then see that tiny baby arrive. To photograph the first smiles, the wobbly steps, the new little personalities. To come back again and again as their family changes and grows.

I never take for granted that I get to be there for these pieces of their story.

Because the photographs are never just about how their children looked that year. They become little markers of who they were together.

And years from now, I hope they look back and don't just see a beautiful photograph.

I hope they remember exactly how it felt to be there. 🤍

What a privilege it is to be trusted with that.

There’s something bittersweet about realizing your children are always becoming someone new.

Just when you get used to who they are, they change.

The baby who needed to be held constantly becomes the toddler who wants to do everything himself.
The little hand that once reached for yours begins to pull you toward the next adventure.
The things you thought would last forever become things you suddenly realize you’re doing for the last time.

And motherhood asks us to keep moving with them.

To love who they are now without wishing away who they were.
To make room for who they’re becoming while sometimes quietly missing the little person they used to be.

I think that’s the strange beauty of motherhood...there is so much joy in watching them grow, and so much tenderness in knowing that every version of them is temporary.

Maybe we aren’t meant to hold onto these seasons.

Maybe we’re meant to notice them.

To let ourselves be fully here, even when part of us already knows we’ll miss it someday.

Because the season will change.

And then, somehow, we’ll find ourselves falling in love with the next one, too. 🤍

There was a time when I imagined family vacations looking a little different.

I pictured the big adventures, the must-see attractions, the perfectly planned days.

Instead, the moments I can't stop thinking about are the smallest ones.

Watching two little boys spend what felt like hours throwing rocks into the ocean.

Tiny sandy footprints trailing behind us everywhere we went.

Buckets filled with hermit crabs that were carefully collected, admired, and returned.

Ice cream every chance we got, because somehow it just tastes better on vacation.

It's funny how becoming a parent changes what feels worth remembering. The places are wonderful, but it's the ordinary little moments that become the ones you wish you could bottle up forever.

I know one day they'll outgrow sandy toes, endless rock throwing, and the excitement of finding one more hermit crab. Until then, I'll happily build my favourite memories around all of it.

The funny thing about family photos?

Sometimes the real MVP isn't the photographer... it's the snack.

When we had our newborn photos taken after my second son was born, my oldest was just 22 months old and having a day. Goldfish crackers became the currency of cooperation. They made appearance after appearance, tucked into little hands and scattered between moments.

At the time, I remember desperately trying to hide them. I wanted everything to look perfect.

Fast forward to now, and those little orange crackers make me smile every single time I see them. They instantly transport me back to exactly who my toddler was in that season.

This sweet family had their own version of that story...Cheerios. Tiny handfuls passed over between hugs, cuddles, and giggles. And you know what? I didn't edit them all away.

Because years from now, I have a feeling they won't remember the bribery... they'll remember the little person who needed a handful of Cheerios to make it through family photos.

And somehow, that's even more perfect than a photo without them.

There are so many things no one tells you about becoming a mom for the second time.

Everyone talks about loving another baby without taking love away from your first. But no one really talks about how much YOU change.

With my first, I questioned everything. I worried I was doing it wrong. I rushed through the hard days, always waiting for the next stage, hoping it would get easier.

With my second, I knew better.

I knew the sleepless nights would end. I knew the contact naps wouldn't last forever. I knew the clingy phases, the messy house, the milk-drunk smiles, the tiny hand wrapped around my finger... they were all passing far too quickly.

It didn't make motherhood easier, but it made me softer. More present. More confident in my own instincts.

My second baby gave me something I didn't even realize I was missing: redemption.

A chance to experience those fleeting early days with less fear and more trust. To slow down instead of wishing time away. To appreciate the ordinary moments I once overlooked because I was so busy trying to do everything "right."

And now, when I photograph families with little ones, I think that's what I'm really chasing.

Not perfection.

Just the feeling of this season... before it quietly slips into memory. 🤍

Most days don't feel romantic.

They feel rushed.

You're packing lunches, reminding someone to put shoes on, carrying a child who's suddenly "too tired to walk," and wondering when you last had a conversation that wasn't interrupted.

But every once in a while, you slow down.

You hold hands without thinking.
Your child tucks themself between you.
The sun starts to set, and for twenty minutes the rest of the world feels far away.

That's the version of your family I hope you remember.

Not because it's rare, but because it's always there underneath the busy.

Sometimes you just need someone to show it back to you

When I first started photographing newborns, I thought the images needed to happen at home.

But becoming a parent has taught me that home, in those early weeks, can feel like a lot.

A lot of laundry.
A lot of feeding.
A lot of trying to remember what day it is.

Sometimes home is exactly where you want to be. Sometimes a change of scenery feels like the deepest exhale.

That's why I love the idea that newborn photos can happen anywhere.

Not because the location matters, but because every family deserves to be documented in a way that feels right for them. In a way that honours the reality of this season, not the version they think they're supposed to have.

The newborn days are messy and beautiful and exhausting and fleeting, often all at once. Those are the moments worth remembering.

This summer feels different.

It's the first one in four years that I haven't been pregnant or caring for a baby. For the first time in a long time, life feels like it's exhaling.

There have been moments of guilt, dropping my boys off at daycare while I'm home. Moments where I've questioned whether I should be filling every hour with work or making up for lost time.

But we've also made a choice this summer to protect something we've been missing for years: time together.

Less chasing productivity.
More chasing memories.

We've packed the car for little getaways. Stayed up late around campfires. Said yes to slow mornings and family adventures because these are the summers I've been dreaming about while surviving the newborn years.

Photographing families has always reminded me that childhood doesn't wait. This summer, I'm trying to remember that for my own family, too.

Maybe the laundry can wait.
Maybe the emails can wait.

These days won't.
