I thought I had posted this, but it is also meant for the New Year! So, to all my friends and to the many wonderful people who have given such wonderful homes to my wolfhounds over the years! May we all have a great 2026 NEW YEAR! Thank you Sandi for your assistance in the creation of this fun greeting.

Around 600 BC, Greek writers watching Celtic warbands storm Delphi noticed something terrifying at their side: towering hounds hurtling into battle alongside the warriors. Those were the ancestors of the Irish wolfhound, known in early Irish as “cú” – the same word found in heroic names like Cú Chulainn.

To the ancient Irish, these dogs were not lawn ornaments or hunting accessories; they were status symbols, diplomatic gifts, and living weapons. Law tracts mention them guardedly, fining anyone who harmed a nobleman’s hound more than a common farmer’s cow. Poets praised them as “gentle when stroked, fierce when provoked,” a perfect motto for an animal expected to sleep by the hearth one night and face down enemies the next.

By the late Roman Empire, their reputation had spread so far that senators were asking for exports. In 393 AD, Quintus Aurelius Symmachus thanked his brother for a shipment of Irish hounds destined for the arena, where they were set against lions and bears. “All Rome viewed with wonder,” he wrote – and this from a city used to every kind of exotic spectacle.

A thousand years later, saga writers in Iceland were still talking about huge Irish dogs guarding Viking halls, patrolling the firelit longhouses while their masters slept. Names like Samr and Vigi appear in the sagas as almost heroic characters in their own right, embodiments of loyalty and courage.

Today’s Irish wolfhounds are bred as companions, not war dogs, but their silhouette still carries those old stories: the size that once panicked enemy lines, the calm eyes that watched strange shores and smoky arenas. Beneath the “gentle giant” nickname is a long memory of battlefields, royal courts, and the people who trusted their lives to a dog.

What makes their legend so powerful is the contrast. These animals could crush a warrior on the field, yet the sources insist on their tenderness with children and their fierce attachment to their masters. In an age before steel armor and fi****ms, sometimes the last line between a family and disaster was a single, watchful hound standing in the doorway.

Behind every banner and spear in Celtic and Norse storytelling, there is often a shadow at the hero’s heel – four-legged, silent, and ready. Remembering the Irish wolfhound means remembering that even in the most violent centuries, humans still reached for loyalty, protection, and companionship in the shape of a dog.

Just a quick heads up posting. I have a just turned 6 month old (On August 8th) puppy bitch being returned this week for rehoming. This puppy is in perfect health with no issues and in fact has completed beginners obedience and been socialized, shots, etc. The reason is due to the owner's sudden health issues and she does not want to see her girl being crated for long periods of time. I will be posting photos after I pick her up soon and should you have any questions or interested you are welcome to contact me. Please, only serious inquiries.

Just a quick update. Looks like I am not retiring just yet after all! Will provide greater details in the future when not so rushed! Have a great day and weekend everyone!

I hate FB at times. I have tried to post my retirement twice now and I know the first a couple of years ago did get posted but for some reason this time I can't get it to post. So am going this route. That Meta thing hates me. Anyway, here is the previous post in a nut shell. I am no longer breeding Irish Wolfhounds regularly. My Rhiannon was not a planned breeding per say, but it worked out well for me as I wanted another wolfhound for myself. But, lol, I swear there will be no further Kaldaun litters. This one has almost done me in which is why folks I had to retire. It is physically very difficult for me to handle the whelping and raising of the pups and only due to the kindness of one of my friends and owner that I was able to get through this last one. My advice for looking for a wolfhound is the same I will be doing for myself in the future. Contacting the Irish Wolfhound Club of Canada. The CKC will have breeders but it does not mean they are 'reputable'. Anyone can register as a breeder with the CKC, but it does not mean they have good breeding practices, such as avoiding inbreeding, resting the bi***es in between breedings, etc. Good luck in your searches. Oh and this site will be coming down at the time that my website is also removed (I had prepaid, lol.)

Okay, I made a post a few years ago about retiring as a breeder for health reasons. I am posting this again since I will no longer require the Kaldaun page much longer. I as you can see from my posts have been mainly using it to promote our breed but also for rehoming of my hounds which thankfully has rarely happened. I (lol) had actually announced my retirement on my website but apparently missed announcing it on the 'Welcome' page and thus people are still sending me inquiries. I truly wish I could continue but it is due to health reasons that I have had to make such a decision. I will admit if not for Rhiannon's 'surprise' (yes I will admit not really planned, lol) breeding this page will be closed down at the same time as my website. Many breeders keep their pages up even after they have 'retired' but I am finding it difficult to deal with inquiries and the explanations required as to why the website/page is still 'up', lol. Since I am not a fan of a lot of posting it is my decision to take it down in the near future and save my time and those who are looking for their "dream dog". It has been a wonderful time and I have been most fortunate it being able to participate in maintaining this wonderful breed, but though the spirit is still willing, the flesh is definitely not, lol, as Rhiannon's little surprise has shown. Best wishes everyone.

So, I mentioned I would post photos of the sire of my litter, Angus, which is due next week, lol. I need to thank Susan Prokopenko of Glennamadda and his co-owner whom he lives with for taking the time to take a few for me. He is not groomed for show, but is a young male, not three yet, and is showing promise of the mature male he is going to be. Here are a few of him in his winter glory, lol.

I am so proud to announce that Rhiannon is pregnant! My last breeding for my 'kennel'. The sire Ch Wolfholm Winter Solstice of Glenamadda, aka Angus is a wonderful boy and we are looking forward to some very special puppies.
Puppies due approximately February 8, 2025. If interested contact email is [email protected]
PS, I have included two photos of the sire, Angus as a young pup taking a Best Puppy in Group and the second is of him at 18 months (he is standing just behind Morgan a lovely older Grandchampion. I will do my best to get a current photo of him, lol, which I meant to do when I was there for the breeding! I do seem to have a single track mind, lol.
