Elizabeth Hunt Photography

Elizabeth Hunt Photography Conceptual and Interdisciplinary Artist Within her practice, she seeks to take an interdisciplinary approach to social engagement and activism.

Elizabeth Hunt is a French Canadian settler artist from Sarnia, Ontario, the traditional Anishnaabek territory of Aamjiwnaang. Growing up having benefited from the economic impacts of the local petrochemical industry, but fearing its consequences on the environment and its occupants, she became increasingly aware of the complex politics of her hometown. As a conceptual artist, Elizabeth’s work is

grounded in a systematic study of humanity in which she unpacks the intersections of the economic, social, political, and environmental. By employing data visualization through the lens of developments in imaging techniques as well as networked information and communications technologies, Elizabeth’s work aims to provoke thoughtful inquiry and discussion as a means of communicating and bringing attention to contemporary issues. Elizabeth earned a diploma in digital photography from Lambton College in 2017, and graduated from the Queen’s University BFAH program this spring. She is currently completing a Bachelor of Education at Queen’s University.

Exhibiting my thesis work in the same month as convocation was such a wonderful and validating experience. Thank you to my amazing fiancé and his family for their endless love and support throughout my BFAH journey. This exhibition would not have been as successful if it weren’t for them; from letting me turn the bathroom into a dark room, taking late night drives through the valley, troubleshooting excel, assisting with chemistry experiments, and collecting snow, water, and ants. It has certainly been an interesting ride, but so worth it to create work that has enabled us to discuss the complex dynamics of life back home.

Special thank you to the amazing team at Union Gallery for this opportunity and all of their support with this exhibition. I can’t believe it’s already time to tear down and take my six legged friends back to Sarnia! 🐜

I am so excited to be showcasing my most recent projects through a solo exhibition at Union Gallery this month!

Illusive.site is a site-specific installation in which I begin to unpack my upbringing in Sarnia, Ontario, home of chemical valley and open up conversations regarding corporate land expropriation.

This solo exhibition features an ant farm, video projections of the sublime landscape, silver halide photograms exposed to industrial light pollution, and live atmospheric data consolidated into a visual spreadsheet reflecting corporate, sociopolitical, and environmental tensions.

Four years ago, I made a difficult choice to pivot from what had been my dream job and follow a new dream by going back to school to obtain a Bachelor's of Fine Arts and a Bachelor's of Education. From navigating the chaos that was university level studies during a pandemic, to finding a balance between academics, athletics, community involvement, and working to pay my own way through school, it has not been an easy ride to finally earning my BFAH and reaching the last leg of my B.Ed. That said, I am so excited to be back to sharing my work with you as I rebrand this page to fit with who I've grown into these last few years; a conceptual and interdisciplinary artist.
