Sometimes the best portraits are the ones with the least in them. Simple styling, soft light, a dark background, and a subject that does all the work.

I say this all the time, the thing I chase the most when I work with people is capturing the genuine person. I want people to look at my portraits and think “wow that’s really them”. And I feel that being genuine is becoming even more important in a world where fake is more and more becoming the norm.

Whatever it means to you the person I want to meet and work with is the real genuine you.

Some once upon a time portraits captured back in my North Bay days. I still miss the creative community I had built up there, some incredible people frequented my studio and I still believe I owe a lot of my growth as a photographer to the work I did with them.

It’s always felt strange to me that most of my consistent supporters are complete strangers, while most of the people I know in person are silent. We can do better.

Supporting your friends can be as simple as liking or sharing their posts. Engagement drives reach, and it costs nothing in time or energy.

Instead of my normal of late dark and dramatic work, I felt like today needed a little bit of colour. The portrait series from eight years ago today should do the trick, yes? Also; any excuse to reshare my work with Jasmin.

I’ve always been a many acquaintances but few close friends type of person. The woman in this series is easily one of the closest. Met doing humanitarian work in Africa, and the best of friends for the now decades since. Because of that this series is also a perfect example of how photos can be ‘beautiful woman posing’ to many, can be so much more to specific viewers. My passion is creating photos that are special to a few regardless of how they’re viewed by the majority.

Today’s throwback (from four years ago today) is brought to you by model, actress, and graceful aging advocate - Lori! I don’t think I ever completed a portrait or headshot session with Lori that wasn’t somehow memorable. Just a good person.

People are always saying you need to break out of your comfort zone, I’m determined to break back into mine. Close crops, headshots, a focus on capturing genuine character and interesting people. Laurel allowed me a fraction of her valuable time to push back in that direction.

According to my memories this stunning portrait of my friend Bridget was captured four years ago ago today. On one hand I think thats a fantastic reason to re-share it. But on the other hand it’s a sad reminder that moving meant leaving behind many of the people I adored working with.
