Production Photo Retoucher (Freelance Contract)

About Us

Not Normal Photography is a purpose-built photography studio based in Langley, BC. We create bold, creative, and cinematic imagery for individuals, businesses, and brands.

We’re looking for a detail-oriented Production Photo Retoucher to assist with production editing. This is primarily a remote, contract position with flexible hours. While most work can be completed remotely, some projects may require attendance at our Langley studio. Work volume will vary depending on studio bookings.

Responsibilities

Prepare photographs for final artistic editing by completing production retouching tasks such as:

* Cleaning and evening out backgrounds
* Removing wrinkles, creases, floor marks, and other distractions
* Removing unwanted objects such as exit signs, electrical outlets, cables, shadows, or small background distractions
* Basic object removal
* Face swaps when required
* Following our production editing checklist
* Returning organized Photoshop files by agreed deadlines

Final creative editing—including advanced skin retouching, colour grading, creative lighting, and artistic finishing—is completed in-house.

If you’re ever unsure whether something should or shouldn’t be edited, we’d rather you leave it and ask than guess.

Qualifications

We’re looking for someone who has:

* Strong Adobe Photoshop skills
* Excellent attention to detail
* The ability to follow instructions consistently
* Reliable turnaround times
* Good communication skills
* Previous photo retouching experience (portfolio or sample work preferred)

Experience with portrait or commercial photography is an asset but not essential.

Compensation

This is a freelance contract position paid on a per-image basis.

Please include the following with your application:

* Your per-image rate for the production retouching described above
* Your typical turnaround times
* Examples of previous retouching work, if available

Paid Editing Trial

Shortlisted applicants will be invited to complete a paid editing trial using a small selection of our images.

The trial is designed to assess:

* Attention to detail
* Consistency
* Speed
* Ability to follow instructions

It will also help us determine the average time required per image for future production work.

We’re looking for someone who takes pride in producing clean, consistent work and understands that great production editing is an important part of creating exceptional final images.

How to Apply

Please email your cover letter, resume, and the requested information above to [email protected] with the subject line:

Freelance Production Retouching

We appreciate all applications; however, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

The Great Flower Incident 🌸
People often ask where my ideas come from.
This one started with my mom…
…and her very first experience with an online shopping spinner.
She thought she was saving us money.
A few days later, boxes started arriving.
Then more boxes.
Then even more boxes.
By the time we’d unpacked everything, the studio was buried under paper flowers and Mom was convinced she’d made one very expensive mistake.
What happened next became one of my favourite creative projects we’ve ever built.
If you’ve ever wondered what happens behind the scenes before a photograph is created, I think you’ll enjoy this story.

I’d love to know…
Have you ever accidentally ordered far more of something than you intended? 😂

What started as an online shopping mistake became one of our favourite creative studio sets. Go behind the scenes and discover how inspiration can come from the most unexpected places.

A professional headshot is often your first introduction—on LinkedIn, your company website, speaking engagements, proposals, or even a Google search.
One of the most common questions we hear is, "What should I wear?"
The answer isn't always what people expect. Choosing clothing that photographs well is about more than wearing something "professional." Colour, fit, patterns, and even the background all play a role in creating an image that feels authentic and represents you well.
We've put together a practical guide with the advice we share with our own clients before every session.
We hope you find it helpful.

Think you already know what to wear for your headshot session? A few of our biggest tips might surprise you. Discover how to choose clothing that photographs beautifully, feels comfortable, and reflects who you are.

Some people see a pile of old CDs.
Hayley saw an image.
What followed were days of planning, building, experimenting, and one unforgettable moment where all I could do was stand back and say, "Wow."
It was one of those rare moments where you suddenly realize you're watching someone with a truly extraordinary creative eye.
That story is the inspiration behind our newest blog.
Because the truth is, great photography doesn't start with a camera. It starts with seeing something that nobody else does.
If you'd like to read the story behind one of our favourite images, we'd love to share it with you.

Do you really need to update your headshot?

If your current headshot still looks like you, do you really need a new one?

It's a fair question—and the answer might surprise you.
A great headshot isn't just about looking good. It's about making the right first impression, building trust, and making sure the person people meet online is the same person they'll meet in real life.

We dive into when it's worth updating your headshot (and when it isn't) in our latest blog.
