Ashley Preeper Photography I’m a photographer based just outside of Vancouver, BC. I photograph everything under the sun, from couples and families to landscapes and nature.

I take a journalistic approach to my photography. My goal is to tell a story through imagery alone.

Family sessions with a little one under 5 are made easier with many different tips and tricks, but there is ONE thing that is the MOST important for you to bring...

Patience.

There is nothing more important to bring with you to your family photo session with a toddler than patience.

Your toddler will be leading the session.

LET them lead the entire experience. Follow them wherever it is they want to go, and take interest in whatever it is they take interest in.

Keep them occupied without focusing too much on the camera, especially if they are usually camera-shy.

They will NOT perform when you want them to, but when they decide they want to do a "cheese" for the camera, you will need to act fast and join them.

Adults have made photo sessions into a hugely performative experience. It's the reason why so many people say, "We aren't the most photogenic," or "were really awkward in front of a camera."

Performance feels awkward if you aren't a model, and toddlers, on some level, already understand that by the time they're three years old. They are less cooperative when you pull them out of the moment.

So, instead of expecting "picture perfect" moments with your toddler, expect moments of exploring the world from your toddler's eyes, and rest assured that we will catch at least one picture-perfect moment in between it all.

There are so many things about these two that I love, but I think one of my absolute favourite details about them is that a vital part of their origin story relates to the "OOOOHHH LONG JOHNSONNNN" cat video from the early 2000s. I think that speaks volumes about the fun, silly, and youthful nature of their love. They're a couple, yes, but they're also best friends. They complement each other perfectly. She hates cooking, but doesn't mind cleaning. He doesn't like cleaning, but doesn't mind cooking. How's that for symbiotic?

I always find they respond to an ageed upon injustice with the same incredulous tone, similar facial expressions, and often will say the same thing in different words, but sometimes even in the same words. They share an incredibly similar sense of humour, though he tends more towards the dry and sarcastic side of things while she is more direct. They're both hilarious regardless of their approach. They both love to use weird, silly voices that are sooooo freaking contagious. Spend enough time with them and you WILL adopt the voices. Trust me.

I hope I am lucky enough to watch them grow old together because I think they're going to remain fun, silly, and youthful well into their senior years and I would love to be able to witness it 🥹

Stayed tuned for their wedding photos; they finally tied the knot on October 13th through an intimate elopement in beautiful Golden Ears Provincial Park!

You may remember K&E from their engagement post in 2023, which involved a lovely sentimental proposal that felt like a warm hug to be a part of.

These, again, supremely sentimental humans decided to spiritually tie the knot at one of their favourite places on earth: Shambhala Music Festival in beautiful Salmo, BC!

It was an extremely go-with-the-flow event, but despite the lack of a solid plan, the day was woven with heartfelt details.

K had a friend make her a beautiful body jewelry piece to add to her wedding ensemble, with intentionally chosen labradorite as the main pieces.

On the original date of the wedding, a good friend did K's hair for her because she was stressing about paying way too much for someone at Shambs to do it.

We ended up being told that we weren't allowed to use the spot K&E had set their sights on, and their friends were ready to bribe someone to let them use it anyways. They gave it a valiant effort, unfortunately to no avail. It was stressful, but E kept K calm through it, and we all took the pivot in stride, finding a new spot that evening to follow through with the wedding the next morning.

The next morning, the wedding guests helped pick the best flowers for the bouquet along the trail to the new wedding spot.

K's best friend helped her put on her dress and jewelry, while another friend helped place her hair accessories.

One guest found a frog in the river, and naturally, almost everyone was interested in it. K&E both share a care for and love of nature, so it's only natural that their friends also share this love and care.

K's little brother walked her down the "aisle" (which was really walking her across a somewhat swiftly moving river) and gave her away to E.

One of K&E's friends (who has a dynamite accent, incidentally) officiated the nuptials, and did a fantastic job, of course!

It was, as always, such a beautiful experience to capture the wedding of two people I care very much about, but the memory is also tied to my first Shambhala experience, so it lives in an extra special place in my heart 💚

My mission in photographing a wedding is always to tell the story as clearly as possible from beginning to end. From the smallest of details, to the most heart-filled moments, I'm watching for it all, and N&T's day was filled with both.

Both N&T come from emotional families, but N's family positively BURSTS with the full range of human emotion. It was both beautiful and fascinating to witness throughout the week we spent together in Mexico, especially as someone who comes from a less emotional upbringing.

One of my favourite things about weddings is that they always speak volumes about the entire essence of the couple.

"How so?" You might wonder.

Pay attention. Look closely.

How does the day unfold? Is it easy and simple the whole way through? Or does it start chaotic and stressful, then become easy as things start to move? Is it organized and structured? Or flowy and bouncy?

Are there a significant amount of small details that have gone into the day? Or just a few here and there, with a larger focus on the bigger things?

Have the couple enlisted a ton of help from their wedding party, or have they taken care of almost everything themselves?

What kind of venue have they chosen? Is it all inclusive? Or is it just the venue itself?

What does their decor look like? Is it modern and minimalist? Is it bright and colourful? Is it rustic and earthy?

Have they chosen to elope with just the two of them, or have they opted for a huge celebration with all of the people they've ever met?

What about the day does it seem like they've placed the most importance in?

Those are just a few small things that really illustrate the soul of the couple. It shows where they place value, how they approach problems, their tastes, their styles... It's like witnessing what they've built together over the years all coming to THIS moment. I guess that kind of is what the ritual of a wedding is - committing to continue to build upon the foundation you've already started to build.

Anyways, as usual, honoured and grateful to have been part of yet another beautiful wedding day 💚

Alright, this is another late post, but this impressive gal and her fiance deserve a special feature!

This set is from Kirsten's grand opening of her SECOND business, .and.ember.co in downtown Mission. Not only did she fund this venture solely on her income from her business as a tattoo artist, but she and her fiance did everything shy of the plumbing and some of the electrical entirely by their own hands. She also sourced all fixtures and decor second-hand or locally made!

To celebrate the grand opening, Kirsten hosted an artisan pop-up market in the courtyard which hosts the pottery studio which several artists of different varieties participated in! The also hosted a wonderful little ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the event!

Kirsten's fiance, Ethan, is also opening his coffee and rare plant shop, , right next door to Earth & Ember! The work didn't stop after Kirsten opened her pottery studio - they've both been working hard getting the cafe ready to open up very soon (possibly this Friday if all goes well, but definitely sometime this month by the sounds of it). The cafe will feature Ethan's super special method of brewing the perfect cup of coffee (seriously, he is like a chef with the finesse he uses to make coffee), as well as Kirsten's talent for making fresh baked sourdough and other goodies... Oh, and of course a selection of rare plants to purchase!

It was an honour to be able to document yet another big moment in my good friends' lives, and an honour to also vend at the event!

If you need a sign to elope on a mountaintop with your friends and family regardless of weather conditions, let this be it.

C&D got married on the Elk Mountain summit on a rainy Monday, June 3rd, 2024. I've always said a couple's wedding often speaks volumes about their lives, from what the value to how they share love, and this rang especially true here. Both C&D are heavily outdoorsy people, bordering on the extreme side of outdoorsy with their love of climbing and D's history in Search and Rescue, so it only makes sense that they'd choose to elope on a mountain that holds a special place in their hearts.

To make the journey a little easier on them and their guests, they drove groups of their guests on a rough FSR up to the halfway point of the trail (notice they used a Delica to do so? Someone once told me "all great adventures start with a Delica," and that, again, continues to ring true time and time again). Because C&D took care to bring extra supplies to make the chilling rain more bearable for all, each person in the group brought different items up the mountain with them to help alleviate the load. The original plan was to do the ceremony out in the open with mountain views in the background, but as it started to snow near the summit, they decided to do the ceremony within the trees instead and it made for the most perfect moody PNW vibes!

Overall, it was the most adventurous elopement I've ever been a part of, and I am so grateful to have met a group of such incredibly kind people. C&D, your love is inspiring and I hope your lives continue to be full of wild adventure for years to come!

Despite never having shared any shots from this wedding, it was one of my absolute favourite weddings I've shot. Every single wedding I've had the pleasure of being a part of has a special place in my heart, but this one holds a really big spot.

The whole day radiated with love and, for lack of a better word, peace. There was so much thought and intention put into every bit of it.

My favourite part of the entire experience was watching M&K grow into each other so wonderfully from their engagement session to their wedding day. In their engagement session, there was no doubt in my mind that they were very much in love, but there were moments when I could tell that they were still learning the best way to coexist as a unit (not to say that they weren't coexisting well, of course... I doubt they'd have been planning to get married if they weren't). By their wedding day, they seemed to be in perfect sync, and their love had deepened beautifully. This lovely couple is a real testament to what time and dedication does to love.

M&K, I'm sorry it took so long to give you a spotlight on my feed. You deserve it 💚

It's been a while since I've posted anything here, and truth be told, it's because I've taken a step back from photography since last year... But if there's one thing that will bring me out of my temporary hiatus, it's PUPPIES IN FLOWERS 🥹

These five adorable Aussie shepherds are around 6 weeks old! In the market for an Aussie puppy? I might know somebody 😏 (.cheyne)

One of my biggest regrets is not asking my husband to take camera photos of me and my late kitty, Crouton. Pets are family. Get photos with them like they're your kids 🥹💚

Thank you, Robyn and Michael, for letting me document your little family unit in Digby's puppyhood and again in his adulthood! Can't wait until your new addition (it's another puppy, guys, not a baby) arrives and we can take photos with her too 😍
