Our experience of Puerto Vallarta was so many things at once: chaotic & peaceful, verdant & gritty, cheerful & heartbreaking, charming & unsightly, welcoming & harrowing. In just ten days it felt like this city showed us so many different sides.
Despite our misfortune to be there during one of her worst days, I was surprised to return home and feel only fondness and an ache to return again someday soon.

Things I didn’t know about butterflies before our visit to the wonderful native butterfly sanctuary in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico:

- some butterfly species are territorial and make clicking noises when fighting

- you can tell males and females apart by the width of their abdomens (male: long and thin, female: wide to hold the eggs)

- butterflies emerge from their chrysalis with their wings curled up and wait for them to unfurl before they are able fly away, they begin trying to mate immediately after

- bright coloured butterflies eat nectar (usually from flowers of the same colour) whereas dark coloured ones eat fruit that has fallen onto ground, in both cases they are well camouflaged from predators while eating

- butterflies in the wild usually only live for 1-2 weeks before they eaten by a predator (birds, spiders, scorpions or dragonflies) that is why we usually see them with bright colours. Older ones have faded wings or pieces missing and that is a normal part of their aging

If you are in Puerto Vallarta I’d definitely recommend spending a half day here, it was incredible! 🦋

I’m not entirely sure why but I am very drawn to photographing the later stages of life. In my Substack article this week I’m exploring what we can learn from the processes of decay in the natural world. Link in stories or my bio to read the full article. 🥀

There are 8,760 hours in a year, do you have a favourite one? Mine is the first hour of daylight on the morning of the first frost of the year - the space between sunrise and when the sun’s heat melts off the ice.

For a few minutes the sun’s rays meet the ice-crusted earth and light up all objects that the frost has touched, creating halos and glittery refractions.

From the passenger seat • an excerpt from this weeks Substack about managing my highway anxiety: “The photos I’ve taken from the passenger seat that actually turn out are among my favourites. To me they seem to hold more emotion than anything I’ve ever shot while standing still. They are a reminder that life is a wild combination of beauty and terror and that my body and heart have the capacity to hold it all at the same time.” Link in my stories or bio to read more 💌
