I’ve always been curious about people. I think it’s part of why I love photography so much. A photograph can show what someone looks like, but I’ve always been more interested in the person behind it. What experiences shaped them, what matters to them, what they’ve walked through, and the seasons that have made them who they are today.
That curiosity is a big part of what led me to create SHE. The Women’s Portrait Project.
This one is specifically for women. Not because men don’t have stories and responsibilities of their own, but because this is the story I know best. I’m a woman, I’ve spent more than 15 years photographing families, and I’ve heard versions of the same thing from women again and again.
We spend so much time showing up for everyone else, and we’re often the last ones to step in front of the camera for ourselves.
And there is almost always a reason to wait.
When I lose some weight. When I feel better about how I look. When things slow down. When I feel more confident. When I reach the next milestone.
But I don’t think we should only document the seasons when everything feels exactly right.
Every season is part of our story. Every age. Every size.
Building a business. Raising a family. Changing direction. Starting over. Finding yourself again. Or simply being exactly where you are right now.
We don’t need to look the way we did ten years ago, fit a certain size, or wait until we feel completely confident to be worthy of being photographed. Who we are right now deserves to exist in photographs too.
Lethbridge is full of women leading, building, volunteering, raising families, running businesses, supporting others, and contributing to this community in ways both visible and quiet. Their stories are worth paying attention to.
That’s what I want SHE. to celebrate.
This fall, I’m looking for 8 women to be part of the project, across four Sundays. At the end, the collection will be shared and celebrated. I’ll share more about that as it comes together.
