'Nature Works- if we let it'
Lots of Gophers = Lots of Hawks. We saw many many hawks on our trip to Police Lake and Waterton last week. These are all Swainson's Hawks - the most common in our area.

Gayle's Story~
Early morning on the Red Rock Canyon Road, we spotted the cutest little duckling waddling right down the middle of the road. We slowed right down to pull over at the next available opportunity. Just then, a wildlife officer came flying up behind us, and I thought for sure he’d stop to help - but he drove straight through. My heart nearly stopped thinking the little duck was going to get hit, but thankfully it made it through unharmed.

We pulled over, walked back up the road, and gently scooted the tiny duckling off to safety near an area where we thought it may have come from. Then we waited in the truck for a while, hoping to see its mother return. Later, when we checked again, the little one was gone. We’re hoping mom came to collect it, or that it safely waddled its way home.

We didn’t see any birds of prey nearby while we waited, so we’re choosing to believe the story had a happy ending. It was unbelievably cute. We think it may have been a Barrow’s Goldeneye duckling, but we’re waiting for confirmation on iNaturalist.
