This July heat has me dreaming of a white room—a space where every wall is covered with my favorite winter photos. Snow-covered trees, frozen lakes, fresh powder, and frosty mornings. A place where one look is enough to make you feel cooler, calmer, and remind you that winter will be back... eventually. ❄️☀️
Until then, I'll just be over here pretending those snowy memories can lower the temperature. Which ones would you have in your 'White Room'?

Brown-headed Cowbirds get their name from their historical habit of following roaming bison herds across the Great Plains to feed on insects stirred up by the massive hooves. Because bison are nomadic, the birds adopted a nomadic lifestyle, abandoning traditional nest-building in favor of laying their eggs in other songbirds' nests. The relationship between these two native North American species is a classic example of commensalism, where the cowbirds benefit from the easy meals and warm bison fur for nesting material, while the bison are generally unaffected. Because the bison herds kept moving, nomadic cowbirds rarely parasitized the exact same songbird nest repeatedly, which historically allowed host bird populations to recover. However, when European settlers replaced the open-range bison with fenced cattle and cleared forests, the cowbirds adapted to the new environments and spread throughout North America. Plains bison are a keystone grassland species designated as threatened in Canada. Once numbering in the millions, they were nearly driven to extinction in the late 1800s. Today, thanks to extensive conservation and reintroduction efforts, roughly 2,200 exist in the country, largely managed in national parks. Plains bison are distinct from their northern cousins, the wood bison, and primarily historically occupied the open grassland and meadow ecosystems of the southern Canadian prairies (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba). As a keystone species, their grazing, wallowing (rolling in dirt to create shallow craters), and trampling actively shape prairie biodiversity by creating micro-habitats for other wildlife and plants. A flycatcher but not sure which one. Least or Willow? or some other? One of the beautiful birds we saw at Cameron Lake at Waterton Lakes National Park, Parks Canada last week. The new growth on the trees is beautiful.

A little yellow to brighten this rainy day as we enjoy our morning coffee.
Northern Yellow Warbler in Pavan Park, Lethbridge

"Roughly 60% of their diet is caterpillars. They also consume wasps, mayflies, moths, mosquitoes, beetles, damselflies, treehoppers, other insects, insect larvae, and spiders. They acquire prey by gleaning in shrubs and on tree branches, and by hawking prey that tries to fly away. Other invertebrates and some berries and similar small juicy fruits are also eaten, the latter especially by northern yellow warblers in their winter quarters. The yellow warbler is one of several insectivorous bird species that reduce the number of coffee berry borer beetles in Costa Rica coffee plantations by 50%." Thank you little songbird

From my rainy trip to Saskatchewan this last week. This beauty was near Kyle, Saskatchewan - north of Swift Current. He was in the mood to pose for me! I have never seen Saskatchewan so green - the entire province! Both the scenery and wildlife was nice to see.
