Sometimes people ask me what's the most challenging thing I've ever photographed. The real answer is small fast birds, like canaries (I used to do quite a bit of volunteer photography for San Francisco Animal Care and Control). Fortunately, these days, I'm not called upon for canary photos much.
After birds, cats and young children are definitely the trickiest. (People are always so impressed I can photograph their dogs - dogs are easy! They know their names, love treats, and sit on command.)
So what are my tips for photographing young kids? First of all, start with reasonable expectations. Your toddler won't be able to pose and smile for the camera the whole session - that's a lot to ask even from an adult! Expect that we'll need to be flexible and try a few tactics to get successful photos.
Also, be quick! Get into a pose and take the photos fast, before your young child has exited the scene for something more interesting, like a cool pile of dirt. This is not the time for checking that everyone's outfits are wrinkle-free - try to do that before you set up the photo.
Use a toy that makes noise to get their attention. I have a couple of squeaky toys that I use to get babies, toddlers, and dogs to look at the camera. They work almost every time!
Take short breaks, reset frequently. If it's not working, let your kids run around for a minute or do some quick jumping jacks, then try again.
And last but maybe most important, embrace serendipity! Photograph kids doing what they end up doing, even if it's not what you planned. I took these four photos at the end of a maternity/family session, and no one was giving any instructions or planning out poses. She wanted to get in the laundry basket and lie on the floor, so that's what I photographed. And I love these photos just as much as (if not more than) the other photos from the session.
Let me know if you have any other tips for photographing young kids, or if you try any of these!
And if you want to get your family in front of my camera, send me a DM or consider signing up for a mini session on September 30th or October 1st. L!nk in my Fall Minis '23 highlight.
