What turns a portrait into a story?

Join the Sackville Photography Club on Wednesday, May 20th, as we welcome Halifax photographer Dave Reyno for an inspiring evening focused on environmental portrait photography.

With more than 30 years of professional experience, Dave has built a reputation across Atlantic Canada for creating portraits that feel authentic, natural, and deeply human. From commercial studios in Halifax and Moncton to the fast-paced wedding and portrait industry in Toronto, Dave brings a wealth of real-world knowledge, creativity, and storytelling experience to every image he creates.

Environmental portraits go beyond simply photographing a person — they use light, location, atmosphere, and personality to tell a story within a single frame. Whether it’s an athlete in an arena, an artist in their studio, or a musician backstage, these are the kinds of images that connect with people and leave a lasting impression.

Our meetings are always welcoming, relaxed, and open to photographers of all skill levels — whether you shoot with a professional camera, a beginner setup, or just love photography and want to learn more.

But between us? There’s something about a room full of photographers swapping ideas that always sparks creativity.
(And there’s at least a 73% chance someone leaves the meeting researching new gear before they get home.)

Guests are always welcome, and if you’ve been curious about joining the club, this would be a fantastic night to come check us out.

Just a quick heads-up that there’s no club meeting this week—yes, I know, try to stay calm. What will you do with all this free time? Talk to your family? Touch grass? Actually organize your Lightroom catalog? The possibilities are endless (and slightly terrifying). Consider this your official night off to recharge—or, let’s be honest, to go out and take “just a few quick shots” that somehow turn into 500.

For our members: submissions are still wide open for this month’s showcase theme, “Capturing Motion”—so whether it’s fast action, slow shutter magic, or that one perfectly timed shot where everything somehow lined up (we’ll call it skill, not luck), we want to see it. Send your entries to [email protected]
by Wednesday, April 29th at 11:59pm. Freeze it, blur it, pan it—just don’t miss the deadline.

📸 Curious about photography? Come check us out!

The Sackville Photo Club is welcoming guests to join us this Wednesday, April 15th at 7:00 PM for a fun and inspiring evening of photography. You can join us in person at Acadia Hall (our favourite way—great conversations, big-screen photos, and a relaxed, friendly vibe), or hop in online via Zoom if you’d rather ease in from home.

🌍 Featured Presentation:
We’re heading to Africa—no passport required. Local photographers Tina and Darrel Nicks will be sharing their incredible journey photographing wildlife in some of the most breathtaking places on Earth. Expect powerful images, unforgettable moments, and stories that might just move “Africa” a little higher up your bucket list.

🔧 Plus: Tech Talk
After the break, Mark Klaamas will be diving into a practical tech talk—perfect if you’ve ever wondered what your camera is really doing (or why it sometimes feels like it has a mind of its own).

Whether you’re brand new to photography, thinking about joining the club, or just looking for a great night out with creative people, this is a perfect meeting to jump in.

Come see what we’re all about—we’d love to meet you!

📸 Adobe Lightroom 101 – Live Online Workshop

Ever opened Lightroom and immediately thought… “Okay, now what?”

We’ve got you.

On Thursday, March 5th, the Sackville Photography Club is hosting a fun and beginner-friendly introduction to editing in Adobe Lightroom — live on Zoom.

This session is designed to help photographers feel more confident inside Lightroom. We’ll walk through:

✨ How Lightroom is organized
✨ What the main editing sliders actually do
✨ How to build a simple, repeatable workflow
✨ A few live photo edits from start to finish

Whether you’re brand new to editing or just want a clearer understanding of how it all fits together, this is a great place to start.

This event is open to current members of the Sackville Photography Club.

If you're already a member and would like to attend, reach out or watch your member communications for details.

📸✨ You’re Invited: Sackville Photography Club – January 21 ✨📸

Whether you’re brand new to photography, dusting off an old camera, or have been shooting for years, you’re warmly invited to join us for our next Sackville Photography Club meeting. If you love great images, good stories, and learning in a relaxed, welcoming space, you’ll fit right in.

This month, we’re excited to welcome Tarek El Wazzi as our guest speaker.

Tarek’s presentation takes us on a visual journey across a wide range of places and landscapes — from the Northern Lights over Iceland, to the white and black deserts of Egypt, the vast openness of Wadi Rum in Jordan, the mountains of Lebanon, and the familiar (but still pretty magical) landscapes of Nova Scotia.

The focus of the talk is night photography and landscapes, but at its heart, it’s really about place, light, and what inspires us to pick up a camera in the first place. It’s less about technical settings and more about slowing down, paying attention, and seeing the world a little differently — especially when the light is low or the moment just feels right.

✨ Expect an evening filled with beautiful images, travel stories, creative inspiration, and a friendly, low-pressure atmosphere. No matter what camera you use — or if you’re still figuring that part out — you’re welcome here.

📬 Thinking about joining us as a guest?
If you’d like to come check out a meeting, please reach out to our favourite membership coordinator at [email protected] They’ll get you sorted and make sure you feel right at home.

We’d love to have you join us — it’s shaping up to be a great night of photography, curiosity, and shared adventure.

A moment you can’t hold, only witness.
Frozen air, soft light, and a bubble that won’t be here in seconds — but will live on through the photograph. This is what we chase when we slow down and really look.

The year began quietly. 🌕

No fireworks. No countdown. Just the moon, steady and patient, hanging in the dark like it always has — waiting for someone to notice. This was Diane’s first photograph of 2026. A moment of looking up, of pausing long enough to remember that beauty doesn’t rush and inspiration doesn’t announce itself.

Photography often starts this way. Not with mastery or certainty, but with curiosity. With a simple decision to step outside, lift a camera, and see what’s already there. The moon doesn’t change for us — but we change when we take the time to really look at it.

This image isn’t just about the night sky. It’s about beginnings. About permission to start where you are, with what you have, and let the rest unfold slowly.

If this speaks to you, you’re exactly who we’re here for. The Sackville Photography Club is a place for first photos, quiet moments, and learning together — one frame at a time.
