I had a client bring me a bunch of VHS and camcorder tapes. He said his partner already had some done but didn’t know which ones. He gave me the USB that they received when the tapes were done.

It was not helpful. These file names don’t indicate anything useful to help find key memories.

When I digitize tapes, I assign each one a number, then digitize the tape. The file naming convention I use is YYYY-MM-DD_Subject_001.

This information is entered into an Excel document. Once I’ve completed each tape I use the Excel file to print labels for each original tape so they match the digital file name.

Creating a digital mess is almost just as bad as not digitizing the tapes. These could easily be lost in a sea of digital documents.

Look at the difference between these file names. Which one do you think will help you find your memories?

When I opened these film reels, they were covered in mould — fragile, fading, and so close to being lost.

This is what time quietly does to memories we think are safe.

But this is also the part that means the most to me… with care and patience, these moments can still be saved. The laughter, the faces, the stories — gently brought back to life.

There’s something really special about giving memories a second chance. It’s never just film — it’s someone’s family, someone’s history.

If you happen to have old reels tucked away somewhere, it might be worth taking a look at them sooner rather than later.

I spent this afternoon gloved and masked, cleaning the reels and the film. Stay tuned to see how these ones turned out.
