Orange-crowned Warbler. One of the first spring migration warblers to arrive on the south coast we usually hear them before they are seen. But when they can be seen and heard at the same time for me it really hits home that spring has arrived.

It took some time but we saw our first Rufous Hummingbirds (11) today around the Rocky Point Bird Observatory migration monitoring station area. This male looks like it is finding a good food source with pollen seen on the bill.

I was talking on the telephone with Colin Franks earlier this morning and we were discussing that there hasn't been many spring arrivals yet probably due to the stormy wet weather the past few days. Well guess what? Mountain Bluebirds starting popping up in several locations around the city this afternoon. 😄

A few Hutton's Vireos around the Rocky Point Bird Observatory Pedder Bay banding station location this afternoon. Nice to hear and see these birds in the springtime when they are singing constantly.

A new bird for us today. This is an American Dipper which catches all of its food underwater in swiftly flowing streams by swimming and walking on the stream bottom. We watched this one for several minutes retrieving salmon eggs at Goldstream Provincial Park.

Passerine (songbirds) fall migration is nearing the end for many species but there are still a few coming through Victoria, BC. The White-throated Sparrow that I captured today breeds in northern Canada with some migrating though our area towards the California coast for the winter.

While volunteering as a bird extractor in training with the Rocky Point Bird Observatory I was lucky enough to extract the first Black-throated Gray Warbler of the season. This beautiful bird is also the logo bird of the banding station.
