French version to follow..
La version française suit ci-dessous. ...
I’m a proud Acadian.
This is part of my heritage, my history, and my roots.
And seeing this honestly makes me sick.
For 112 years, the statue of Father Camille Lefebvre stood in Memramcook—a man connected to Collège Saint-Joseph and to a period when Acadians were fighting to preserve our language, culture, identity and place in this country.
Now it’s lying on the ground.
And I genuinely hope this turns out to have been an accident.
I hope there is some explanation other than someone deliberately deciding to destroy a piece of Acadian history, because if this was intentional vandalism... this is more than somebody knocking over an old statue.
This is a slap in the face.
A slap in the face to generations of Acadians who fought to keep our language alive.
To the people who refused to let our culture disappear.
To our ancestors who endured displacement, persecution and attempts to erase them—and still managed to preserve an identity strong enough that generations later, people like me can proudly say:
Je suis Acadienne. ⚜️
We didn't magically arrive here with our culture intact.
People fought for it.
People protected it.
People taught it to their children.
And those children taught theirs.
That is why places, monuments and pieces of history like this MATTER.
You don't have to worship every historical figure represented by a monument to understand that destroying history isn't how we learn from it.
So until the RCMP investigation determines what actually happened, I'm not going to pretend I know whether this was deliberate vandalism, reckless stupidity, an accident, or something else.
But I desperately hope it wasn't hatred or intentional destruction.
Because this is embarrassing. It's heartbreaking. And if somebody deliberately did this, they didn't simply disrespect a statue—they disrespected an entire piece of our collective history.
Bronze can be lifted back onto a pedestal.
Stone can be repaired.
But respect for where we came from is something we should never have allowed to fall in the first place.
❤️🤍💙💛 Proudly Acadian. Toujours. ⚜️

⚜️ FIÈREMENT ACADIENNE — ET ÇA, ÇA FAIT MAL. ⚜️
