A joint venture between Dawson College and Cégep du Vieux Montréal, iC MTL is part of a five year plan:

•to develop an entrepreneurial ecosystem for the creative and cultural sector entrepreneurs;
•to build Quebec’s creative economy;
•to contribute to Quebec’s economic vitality.

Creative and cultural entrepreneurs often have to make do with very little support that meets their unique needs as founders of medium to high growth ventures. Many creative individuals are highly skilled in their domains but have fewer of the skills required to start and manage a new venture. A handful of organizations in Montreal do provide individual support for artists, makers and designers but are limited to helping the self-employed creative entrepreneur or small ventures. By comparison, Montreal’s entrepreneurial ecosystem provides resources to support the tech sector with a variety of activities and services such as accelerators, boot camps, networking events, workshops and startup weekends. Presently, there are no incubators or accelerators supporting creative entrepreneurship in Montreal. Dawson College and Cégep du Vieux Montréal are joining forces to bridge this gap in the creative and cultural sectors by providing substantial support in the form of a combined instructional and pre-incubation program. By creative and cultural industries we mean advertising, architecture, crafts, design, film, photography and video, interactive leisure software, music, performing arts, publishing, television and radio, visual arts, gastronomy

Inspired from best practices in incubation in the USA and Canada and built on a solid foundation of experience in education and on preparing individuals for careers, iC MTL proposes a unique incubation model, combining a short duration instructional program and incubation services.

iC MTL will provide a solid support structure: an incubation co-working space with accompanying business advisory services, networking events, a mentorship program and access to financing, as well as an 8-month instructional program called “Venture Creation for the Creative and Cultural Industries”.

This program will offer budding entrepreneurs, in the pre-startup and startup phases of a new venture, a flexible schedule and multidisciplinary team based, immersive and experiential pedagogy developed specifically for creatives.

Ethnographic studies leading to a design thinking approach will form the pedagogical framework utilized to identify opportunities, solve problems and turn passion into action. Emphasis will be placed on fast-tracking to market.

Our goal is to stimulate the creation of new enterprises in the creative and cultural sector while developing entrepreneurial competencies.
