“Once upon a time, a lonely Crow fell from the sky and was found by a Mother Wolf, who nursed him back to health and raised her in her pack.

Eventually, the Crow became a Wolf, having learned to track, hunt, and survive like them.

One day, a man-made fire engulfed the forest. The lonely Wolf’s siblings all perished, and he found himself alone, wandering the desolate lands in search of his remaining family.

Eventually, he discovered that the Mother Wolf escaped the burning forest to live alongside Man.

Betrayed by her actions, the lonely Wolf cursed the pack and the Mother Wolf’s teachings. He slaughtered his kind and founded his own tribe of animals, displaced by the fire.

In time, one by one, his new pack also betrayed him, so he slaughtered them too, and returned to wander the world endlessly, this time in search of purpose rather than family.

(And no longer lonely – just alone)”

Light tests for the EXOLATEX shoot a few years ago. came out of nowhere and I almost wanted to start the finals then and there.

We tested color schemes for mood (ultimately choosing green and purple for the finals), the orange referencing DEUS EX Human Revolution/Mankind Divided, with warmer tones overall.

[ LEVEL 35 ] Mid Season Finale: XIII_LIGHTENING

The Alchemist has mistaken the Work as complete - perfect, pristine, well thought through… but he has been tricked by his own facade of PERFECTION. In fact, the Work has hardly begun. The untouched must not remain so. Dirty thy hands, child.

Righteousness and fear are the great errors of Leucosis… “Take charge, without limitation or hesitation, and become who you are, for the world needs your true colors…”

If only it were that simple. The mid-season finale dictates otherwise.

But a vague glimpse into the future reveals that “maybe going forward is not the answer. Maybe we should go back”.

Darkness is an achievement in Alchemy. Darkness prepares us. In the Darkness, we admit who we are, fully and bravely, and thus open ourselves to the process of transformation. We practice XII_DARKENING [Melanosis] daily, every time we close our eyes to blink.

Dusk brings wisdom. Sleep tight and return to the Darkness, Foolish Alchemist, for the story must continue…

Angelo Russo is a mixed media artist and art teacher who uses BC Rich for his furious shredding. His acrylic pours have meanwhile turned a lot of heads. We have one of his pieces up on our wall and it’s easily the coolest thing that’s been put up so far.
•
Angelo and I met after our mutual friend sent me in his direction for an art show he was running. I produced video graphic content exclusively for that show and since then we have run into each other on my sets a few times.

「 WANDRD 」 ROGUE 9L SLING

Earlier this year while in San Francisco, I borrowed my cousin’s kit while commuting around the city, downsizing from my 20L EDB and Canon R6 + RF 50mm f/1.2L setup to the modest Fujifilm X-S20 + XF 18mm f/1.4 that fit inside a WANDRD Rogue 6L sling.
•
While out and about I made sure to stop by any and every camera store, and every single employee I spoke to made it their mission to interrupt the conversation to compliment my choice of bag. I went along with it of course, and by the end of the day I decided that I would pick up a 9L to accommodate a little extra gear.
•
Since then, I’ve comfortably fit a body and at least 2 lenses, a small notebook, some snacks, and stuffed extra batteries and the like in the pouches and pockets.
•
The bottom expansion compartment can hold a small tripod or water bottle, too, which makes this my new first choice for an every day bag unless I have a larger production that needs more, or a computer.
•
(Yes, WANDRD… I’m aware there’s a space for a computer, but I’ve yet to try it and I’m not sure I want to commit to that laptop case yet…)

When I first learned off camera flash I had but a single speedlight and one silver umbrella. A friend insisted I “figure it out” and pushed me to produce one image every day, to be submitted by midnight.

There was something therapeutic and fun about the scramble – being alone at 11:30pm after work trying to figure anything out wherever I was before time was up.

Since then I have moved on to power packs and moonlights, and to softboxes and octas. I have fallen for the bigger and better, playing with modifiers of all kinds and favoring very specific ones (parabolics and octas I’m looking at you).

Last week I returned to umbrellas. I always treated the smaller ones as a bit of a beginner’s light shaper considering their affordability and common presence in the beginner’s kit but I have since gone against that idea – umbrellas are incredibly powerful tools when used correctly. When I had TJ on set for a headshot session, I pushed myself to use an umbrella and only an umbrella – no extra light on octa, no kicker, no reflector on a v-flat for fill.

My, how far we’ve come since those days.

End of year self portrait.
•
I chose to seclude myself this year. Though I minimized personal work, every shoot brought more fulfilment than when I was creating just to create. Things have been feeling incredibly stale and exhausted as of late…

I do however remain incredibly grateful for those I consider anchors that I have found throughout the year, whether it be through new, blossoming relationships or rekindled friendships. I made a great effort to seek out people and spend time with them without superficially valued purpose. I have attracted kindred spirits that validate my deepest feelings and give me my due credit. For now, this path feels… true.

On a personal note, taking a step back allowed me to live within my thoughts, inevitably revealing demons I once thought vanquished. But despite constant feelings of betrayal and frustration, truth and light eventually always revealed itself, no matter how difficult or complicated or unwilling I was to accept the pulls of life.

Thus, I further strayed from the innocence and curiosity I held so dearly and credit as driving forces in my journey. There were revelations I simply could not unsee or unhear about situations that continually present themselves, and the more time goes by, the more this festering distaste for inauthenticity and fabricated image grows.

This world seems to be overly obsessed with playing this rushed game of nonsense where every interaction needs to be transactionally “worth it”. So slow and steady I took it, and will likely continue taking it moving forward. Without these people, I very likely would have quit.

Growth continues, albeit more uncertain than ever. I can’t help but feel an odd threat lurking around the corner…

But, still, I move forward, one step at a time.
