VB 2022

It's a great pleasure to be back in the Bahamas for another edition of Vertical Blue.

The best part for me is reconnecting with friends who I haven't seen in a long time.

Like John Muñoz, who is pictured above. John is from Colombia and is the first Colombian to go below 100m (112m actually). He also holds the National Record for static apnea (6:30m).

Tomorrow he will attempt a National Record for depth at Day 2 of VB. Stay tuned!

I had a great time discussing underwater photography, freediving, Whales, Oysters and more.

You can find the full interview on their website or through your favourite podcast providers. I'll also post a link in my bio.

Thank you for the invite and to the whole crew who were very kind and fun hosts :)

About this Photo:

I shot this Juvenile Trunkfish back in 2015 in Roatan, Honduras. These clumsy little fellas are not easy to find, but if you keep looking in the right places, you might get lucky and spot one. They are about the size of a green pea and have not fully developed their fins - so they move like helicopters without rear rotors, spinning out of control!

They take the cake for the cutest marine creature imho. The amount of AWWWWWs this photo has provoked is still unmatched.

Lined Seahorse (Hippocampus erectus)

It's a well-known fact that male seahorses are the caregivers in the Hippocampal world.
But did you know that Lined Seahorses are monogamous? Every morning the males perform a "ritual dance" to impress their lovers and reinstate their connection. During this dance, they make audible clicking sounds. The lifespan of a seahorse is short (1-4 years) and when their partner dies, they often spend the rest of their lives alone.

Longlure Frogfish (Antennarius multiocellatus)

After being in Roatan for a month, it was only on my last possible day of diving (18 hr surface interval before flying) that I was able to take my camera out and shoot some Macro photos with my friends, Rick and Carol at Splash Inn Hotel, Restaurant, Dive Resort.
I knew there was a frogfish at Seaquest Deep, so I asked Patric Lengacher to tell me where it was and he drew me a very "elaborate" map. It was actually quite simple to find, and the coral head it was on was teeming with life.
There were a ton of little fish scurrying about, so instead of trying to eliminate them from the photo, I decided to employ them as a creative framing tool! (I'm not sure of their species, maybe Mickey Charteris can identify?)
Frogfish are like the Potoos of the ocean. They don't come around very often, they're cute and when someone finds one, it becomes the talk of the town! They are also specialized hunters. Frogfish can change their colours to appear like a sponge. They even have large pores to further resemble them.

Northern Potoo (Nyctibius jamaicensis)

Last week George Roatan, Jo E. Fon and I took a little trip to Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum where we saw many beautiful birds, flowers and trees. Just as we were about to leave, we met up with Javier, who works there. He told us about a rare member of the Potoo family (similar to owls) that has been hanging around. We said we would love to see it, so Javier got on his motorcycle and within 5 minutes was back with a location. He walked us over and there was the Potoo! He blended in perfectly with the branch he was clinging to. Javier has got some very good peepers 👀
The Potoo is a nocturnal hunter and in this photo he was getting a little shut-eye high up in the trees. (This photo was taken at around 9 am)

Green-Breasted Mango (Anthracothorax prevostii - female)

The female (as pictured below - evidenced by a white breast and vertical dark stripe) lays two eggs in her little nest where she incubates them for about 2 weeks. The nestling period lasts a little over 3 weeks.
I would like to thank my friends Jo E. Fon and George Roatan from Roatan Birdwatching CLUB-Caribbean Dove. They showed me the beauty in bird watching, and how cool these flying animals that surround our skies and streets really are.
