Most people get to see the desert in the blazing sunshine. While we’re inherently put off by cloudy weather, the mixture of sun, cloud, and rain created a far more unique experience.

The now annual addition of packrafting to our fall Utah trip. This time with zero packing and all rafting down the Colorado River through the Ruby-Horsethief Canyons. Highlights included the warmest days of our trip, golden cottonwoods, playful river otters, and a herd of desert bighorn sheep.

Wildfire risk reduction fuels management piles burn into the night above Harrop across the lake from our driveway. A strangely calming moment to send off the end of my last day of work for another wildfire season.

“Just so you know, you’re about to hit the Duncan River.” An old man told us on the shore as we floated down the Duncan River. Not sure what to make of it, but at least if someone involved thinks you’re lost, then I guess that confirms you’re on somewhat of an adventure.

Sometimes I can take hundreds of photos of the same thing and they never get any better than the first ones I took. Sometimes it’s that final shot that makes all the time worth it. The fickle Aurora, we’d hoped to catch them in the mountains this weekend, but they never like to stick to our schedule. I won’t say no to a Monday night show at 7:30 though, another incredible display nearly on par with this spring.

“If you ain’t burning, you ain’t learning.” Much like the winter world of avalanche work, there’s only so much you can learn in a book or the classroom. Knowledge is gained through experience; from getting outside, doing, and reflecting.
Thanks to for the second shot of me getting out there and… “learning.”
