Have you ever heard a photographer talk about "gels"?

A gel in photography is a thin, transparent sheet of coloured material placed over the light source to change the quality or colour of the light it emits. You can use gels to correct colour imbalances in a photograph - for example to cut down on the orange hue of an ordinary tungsten lightbulb.

But they can also be used to get really creative - you can shift the mood by applying a cold or warm glow, or create excitement with contrasting colours such as the pink and blue colours in this photograph of a dancer.

You can really emphasize the colour when you add effects like smoke from a smoke machine. The options are endless and the creativity is addictive.

Set building can be so creative. Sometimes I start with a simple idea and then build the story from there. In this case, the idea was "lupin". June brings a plethora of these luscious purple flowers to the "wild" side of my yard and I wanted to capture their freshness in the studio. I love moody atmospheres in portraits but wanted to meld moody with fresh - the dark background, bright containers, fresh greenery and flowers was the perfect blend. Enter young model, dress her in colours to match the scene, provide some interaction between her and the flowers and voila! we have some perfect portraits.

Driving down the highway on a gray winter day, I spotted a billboard proclaiming a lavender labyrinth. I instantly envisioned a young woman in a flowing dress, bathed in the hush of late-day sun. This would be a great place for a portrait session!

Bringing that vision to life meant navigating the hum of bees, a rapidly setting sun, and the labyrinth’s winding paths consuming precious time in search of the perfect angle. Every moment was a balance between urgency and wonder, a dance between imagination and fading light.

The final photographs captured not just the serenity I imagined, but the quiet tension of its making—a reminder that beauty often blooms where vision, persistence, and stillness meet.

Do you have a special someone in your life who just happens to have four legs and a tail? Family photo sessions are not just for humans, but can include your four legged friends as well. During this early morning session we explored ways to show off the connection between Remedy and her human Kelly; as well as highlighting Remedy's lively personality. I couldn't help but smile at Remedy's antics as she showed off her fluffy tail, huge smile, and love of jumping. She absolutely vibrated during her portrait on the bridge and though she couldn't wait to be released she held steady. Thank you to Kelly and Remedy for the super fun session.
