Melinda Butler Photography My lens follows what my eye can’t let go of— light, beauty, and the quiet pull of raw emotion. Moments held in time, just long enough to be felt.

I capture not just what is seen, but what it means to be there. I've been drawn to photography for as long as I can remember. Some of my fondest childhood memories were slow Saturdays at my grandparents' house, flipping through old photo albums -- learning about the people who came before me through images and the stories that lived inside them. I got my first camera when I was 9 years old, and fr

om that point on, I was always capturing something -- little moments, people I love, places that felt like home. Life took me in other directions for a while, and aside from my iPhone, photography quietly sat in the background for about ten years. But coming back to it now feels like returning to a part of myself I never really lost. Photography, to me, isn't just about what something looks like -- it's about what it felt like to be there. The connection, the emotion, the moment that might otherwise pass unnoticed. That's what I hope to capture for others -- something real, something lasting, something you can feel every time you look back on it. So that the moments we live today can become the stories someone else holds onto tomorrow.

ECMA 2026 — my first major photography event. Four days spent capturing incredibly talented musicians from Canada’s East Coast while hearing their stories, experiencing their performances, and connecting with artists and industry professionals along the way.

I’m beginning by sharing my red carpet photos. The experience felt surreal from the moment I arrived in Sydney after a 4-hour drive straight from a day of teaching. Walking directly into the middle of the red carpet and stepping into the photo pit was a true “how did I get here?” moment. Surrounded by photographers, flashing lights, and the excitement of the evening, I had the opportunity to capture artists and industry members celebrating well-earned recognition and meaningful moments in their careers.

One of the highlights of the night was being recognized by a few artists who stopped to say, “Hey, I know you!” It was a meaningful reminder of how powerful photography and community can be, and how this platform has connected me with so many talented people across the East Coast music scene.

Over the next couple of weeks, I’ll be sharing galleries from each ECMA event one at a time. Stay tuned for more moments from an incredible week of music, creativity, and connection. Feel free to tag any artists you recognize, and if you’re interested in receiving a watermark-free copy of a photo, please contact me directly.

On the road to the ECMA’s this week, I caught a few laughs with Andre Pettipas (ECMA Entertainer of the Year nominee), Darcy Walsh (ECMA Media Excellence nominee), and Entertainer Rodney Slade, performing Friday.

You’ll find me around the ECMA’s in Sydney later this week, camera in hand, snapping my view of my very first ECMA experience. I grew up watching these awards, so it feels a little surreal to now be attending as a photographer — and honestly, I feel pretty blessed for the friendships forming along the way.

One of the most special parts of Songs From The Square is what happens before a single note is played — the conversations that set the tone for everything that follows. Today it started with May long weekend memories, camping trips, fishing stories, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia comparisons, small-town living, and the everyday details that quietly connect us all.

From there, the songwriter circle moved through four intertwined narratives:

🌲 the calm of forest and lake — the stillness we reach for when life gets loud
⚒️ echoes of mining towns, World War I history, and shipwrecked coasts still living in place
🍻 barroom nights, small-town life, country songs that hit the heart, and holding onto moments before they become memory — including the weight of PTSD
💪 East Coast resilience — faith passed through generations, imperfect living, choosing authenticity, and home as the place that raised you.

Four artists — One unfolding story.

Chris Xiros — Stellarton songwriter blending rock, folk, and modern influences beyond The Clue.
Rodney Slade — Newfoundland country storyteller with warm, heartfelt East Coast writing.
Claire Porter — Newfoundland-rooted, Montreal-honed genre-bending artist with fearless storytelling.
Evan AuCoin — Bay de Verde–born songwriter weaving folk, country, blues, and Newfoundland roots into lived-in songs.

Huge shoutout to East Coast DNA and producer Darcy Walsh for holding space where songs and stories meet in real time.

Join us June 14 as the green room opens again — welcoming:
✨ Taylor Jensen
✨ Autumn MacKay

The intimate green room setting lets artists and audience connect and become friends before the music even begins — shaping the energy of the night together.

If you’re thinking about coming out — this is your invitation. The energy in the room shapes the music just as much as the musicians do.

It’s been a week since hit the East Coast like a hurricane — pulling us right back into our 90s roots, a wave of nostalgia for the years that quietly shaped who we’d become.

I’ve been sorting through favourites in black and white, holding onto that afterglow a little longer.

If it feels good, do it. 🎶📸

Last night was a double debut.

Night 1 of ALT CTRL’s East Coast tour — and my first time shooting at

Somewhere between shooting and singing along, I realized I was belting out the very things I was once too afraid to be free of when I was younger — lyrics carrying both memories and a kind of healing I didn’t know I still needed.

These were the songs that lived in the background of my youth, passed down through my older brother’s speakers, and last night they felt alive in a whole new way.

Charging batteries and heading into Night 2 at with a full heart and a camera ready for more. 🎶📸
