Yā€™all remember when Instagram was just. One photo. Just one photo you liked. And your caption was like one sentence and it was usually an angsty song lyric. There was no algorithm and you just posted pretty pictures and life was good.

I think Iā€™m just gonna do that again. So hereā€™s a pretty picture (but no angsty song lyrics sorry)

Happy Motherā€™s Day to all you beautiful masterpieces.

I was reflecting recently on the fact that, among thousands of women recognized as Saints by the Church, only a small percentage are mothers.

And it occurred to me that the reason for this may not be because less mothers become saints.

Perhaps, itā€™s because motherhood and sainthood go hand in hand, if you let it. Every day requires mundane selflessness. Every day demands unseen sacrifices. We are refined quietly.

Perhaps, there are thousands and thousands of saintly mothers in Heaven, and the only reason they never got public recognition is because their sanctification was achieved in the shadows. Perhaps we have so taken for granted the sleepless nights, the hours of tears and prayers and supplications, that we fail to notice the sainthood unfolding right before our eyes.

The path to Heaven through motherhood seems unremarkable because it is so commonplace. What a mistake it is to confuse the two! St. Therese writes that God calls most of us to our sanctification through the most mundane and seemingly meaningless moments of our lives.

So happy Motherā€™s Day to all the saints in the making on earth, and happy Heavenly Motherā€™s Day to the many, many unnamed Saints, whose tender sacrifices were only truly seen by the Father.
