My Adventures NZ

My Adventures NZ Welcome to My Adventures!! I’m just an ordinary Kiwi bloke who’s always dreamed of exploring New Zealand and giving the van life lifestyle a go.

With my trusty Ford Ranger and Hilltop Caravan, that dream has finally become reality.

First night with my new carpet in from Norca Rugs, and was surprised by the difference it made. The caravan felt noticeably warmer. During the day I would typically wear socks or slippers, but today, just barefeet .

Insulation foam has now been installed between the beds and the outer wall to help trap heat and reduce the chances of condensation building up during the colder months.

With a South Island winter ahead, it's all about making small improvements that help keep the caravan warmer, drier, and more comfortable. Hopefully this will help reduce cold spots and keep any moisture issues at bay.

Out with the old carpet mats and in with a new custom-made carpet from Norca Rugs & Carpets in Levin.

The new carpet fits perfectly and has given the caravan a fresh new look. It's always the little upgrades that make life on the road that much more comfortable, especially when heading into a South Island winter.

A big thank you to Richard at Norca Rugs & Carpets for the great service, expert advice, and quality workmanship. I'm very pleased with the result.

Dropped Theo off at the groomers to look after him while I headed into the office for the week. Already missing the little guy. It's amazing how quickly they become such a big part of your daily routine.
He was certainly enjoying life in the caravan, and now all that's left is an empty bed and his little step sitting there as a reminder. 🐾
I'm already looking forward to picking him up next Thursday as we both head off to the South Island for winter.

Came across a new NZMCA POP. Winemakers Te Horo and the whole setup feels absolutely magical. Sites are limited, so make sure you ring ahead to secure a spot.

There’s a toilet, shower, and even power available. Pets are welcome too, as long as they’re kept on a lead.

It’s only 5 minutes from Ōtaki and has easy access to the main motorway heading south to Wellington, making it a perfect stopover or relaxing getaway.

After the epic fail at Otaki Forks Campsite, I needed somewhere to park up for the night before darkness set in. I decided to head to the Betts NZMCA POP in Manakau, a much more relaxing option after the stress of the narrow drive in and unexpected turnaround earlier in the day.

I was really looking forward to heading into the Otaki Forks Campsite after watching a couple of YouTubers I follow visit the area. The drive in is definitely an adventure — mostly single-lane road, very few places to pull over or turn around, and plenty of low overhanging trees. I won’t lie, it had me gripping the steering wheel a little tighter than usual.

After carefully making my way in, I finally reached the entrance gate… only to find it closed. That meant turning the caravan around and tackling the whole drive back out again.

This opinion might not sit well with everyone, but would I return? Probably not. For smaller vans and self-contained campers, it’s likely a great spot. But when towing a larger caravan, the narrow access road makes things stressful, especially during the busy season when the chances of meeting another vehicle head-on are pretty high. That could easily leave you stuck in a very awkward position.

Early morning mist, glassy reflective water, birds echoing across the lake, and those soft golden evenings that just slow everything down.

Neo and I, and now Theo the dog whom I'm looking after for 3 months, stayed 3 nights and it was magical.
