When my friend, Arlene, needed a new headshot shot, we decided to do a few outdoor portraits as well. Talk about a fun September afternoon. Even Tilly got into the act and slowed down for a few shots. Tilly, the prop puppy!

These are my two co-workers (Neville and Tilly) that oversee what pieces we decide to display in the ArtWorks! Fine Art Show & Sale at the DeWinton Community Hall on Oct.31 - Nov.2. It was a unanimous decision by all 3 of us that Slick Lick Trick (in the background) will in attendance. There's a few new pieces which will be featured that we are pretty excited about. I'll be posting a peek at those in a later post. Neville wants to take over the social media posts for us ... but I'm just not sure!

Here I go again! Always late to the party but what the heck, it's only about 6 months late. I entered 5 images into the PPOC National Salon 2025 and all were awarded. I think I will do a blog post about the story behind each of them on my website www.kimberliephotography.ca later in August which should be fun.

Beautiful story

As photographers, we try to "tell a story" with our images, but the simple fact of the matter is that sometimes images, alone, cannot tell the full story.

This is Sophie Keelan, an Inuit elder I had the fortune to meet and spend some time with during a 2017 into the Torngats.

I photographed this image minutes after landing ashore at a place called Hebron.

I'm venturing to guess that most Canadians have never heard of Hebron (I can admit I had no idea where it was, or what it represented, before that summer).

Hebron was at one time Labrador's most northerly settlement. In 1959 the government made the decision to close the settlement and to relocate the many Inuit families that lived there into larger communities. Community members were not consulted, and families struggled with being forced into communities and areas they were not familiar with. Many extended families found themselves forced apart.

In 2005 the Newfoundland and Labrador government finally apologized to those who were still alive for the pain and hardship this forced relocation caused. Since that time, much work has been done to the formerly abandoned buildings that have remained standing, to restore them and revitalize the area - which historically is one of the most culturally important Indigenous locations in all of Labrador.

Sophie Keelan was one of the people that was forced away from Hebron in 1959 when she was just a girl. She is a survivor. We travelled to Hebron from the Torngats basecamp with Sophie - Hebron is a place that's still incredibly special to her.

Our group overnighted at Hebron; the caretakers of the area allowed us to sleep in a church building that was abandoned in 1959, but has been painstakingly restored over the past decade by many of the Inuit families that were evicted from this area over 60 years ago. We were honoured to sleep in this eerie and important building, but didn't realize that night the significance of our stay.

The next morning, a kind man named Levi Nochasak - he was moved from Hebron when he was pretty much a baby but has since spent summer after summer back at Hebron working countless hours on the restoration - sat our group down.

He was emotional, and we soon found out why.

He said that he was emotional because our group, with our stay in the church, represented the first group to stay overnight in that building in over 60 years. They had been working for years to get the building up to a place where this could happen...and it finally happened.

He said he was honoured, and so happy to see us there...but the honour was all ours.

So, this is just a photo of Sophie. But it represents, to me - so much more that I can't really explain.

I've relied on Technicare Imaging Ltd, for the last 15 years (at least) for my client and art work. I can't say that I've ever been disappointed. I have relied on them to drop ship my work to the US as well.

Thank you to Karen Freeborn, ArtWorks! social media maven, for the lovely profile feature of me this month. Please note the date changes for the ArtWorks! Art Show and Sale ... October 31 - November 2, 2025. Someone booked a wedding on the Saturday of the Thanksgiving Weekend which has traditionally been the show weekend for the last 10 years. Oh well, a change never hurt anyone! Our location has remained the same - the De Winton Community Hall which is a great location, has lots of free parking and they are super to work with. And, we've already booked the October long weekend for 2026. Please feel free to share this post. Thanks!
