The Jingle Dress dancers not only look beautiful, but sound magical!
The dance is a sacred healing dance, where metal cones (jingles) are applied to the regalia - 365 representing a prayer for each day of the year. When the dancers move, the jingles sound like gentle falling rain and serve as healing and wellness for families and the community. It is also believed that the ringing sound carry prayers up to the Creator.

Bless his little heart! This little guy took his dancing very seriously, much to the delight of the powwow crowd!
He was dancing the Prairie Chicken Dance, where actions are birdlike, mimicking the strutting, head-shaking, and foot-stomping of a male prairie chicken trying to attract a hen. The regalia is more minimalist than some powwow regalia, and include two long, curving pheasant tail feathers equipped with colored plumes or fluffs on the tips. These feathers bend forward and bounce to imitate the bird's head movements and alertness.

The Men's Fancy Dance is extremely high energy and visually exciting! It requires a great deal of athleticism - with the dancers moving to an accelerating drum beat, having to stop EXACTLY on the last beat of the drum or get disqualified in a competition.
The regalia is brightly coloured with beautiful beadwork. Some of the key features are the two large feather bustles worn on the upper and lower back, the leg wrappings made of sheep or goat hair, and the two feathers on the headwear that spin and sway with the dancers movements. It's so amazing to watch, but quite a challenge to photograph with highspeed continual movement!

This little moment between friends caught my eye for the striking colours and powwow flagpole off in the distance.
Ominous skies didn't matter -this year the Rama Pow Wow team had a massive tent erected for the dancers one day beforehand, after assessing the soggy weekend forecast!

Chi miigwech Rama Pow Wow for the warm welcome! What a wonderful day of beauty, sharing of traditions, and unexpected great weather! The powwow is an event I look forward to all year!
I had the pleasure of speaking with this beautiful elder woman, who asked if I would mind helping her to tie those intricate beaded flower 'side drops' onto her braids. It was such an honour, and she kindly gifted me this beautiful image!

We recently discovered this very active wasps nest on the underside of our deck by the stairs (my cat happened to be sitting under it when I heard the loud buzzing)! Had it been anywhere else on the property we would have let it be, but due to the high-traffic area, we unfortunately had to remove it. Once we were certain the nest was no longer viable, my husband removed the deck board and flipped it for viewing and removal. This is only the top portion of the nest, as the bottom half fell to the ground. In it's fullness, it was the size of a volleyball and truly a work of art! Fortunately, no one (not even the cat) was stung in the process!
