Last night's sky over Orléans didn't look like much to the naked eye — quiet-to-unsettled Kp all night, no storm watch, nothing dramatic on the forecast. But the camera tells a different story. From about 10 pm to nearly 4 am, a steady green glow builds across the sky, catching the underside of clouds early on and washing out into open, star-filled sky later. This is the thing about living where we do: Orléans sits close enough to the southern edge of the auroral oval that the Reolink picks up activity most nights, even ones that look "quiet" on paper. A 63% waning gibbous moon rose around 9:30 pm and hung around most of the night, so the fact that the glow still shows up this clearly says something about how sensitive this little security camera really is. No major solar drivers this session — a single M3.0 flare from newcomer region AR4524 fired off, but its CME is headed away from us. Nothing to see there, just the ambient hum of the solar wind doing its thing.

No storm, just staying power. Green aurora bands held steady over Orléans from dusk to pre-dawn, powered by a quiet coronal hole stream instead of a big geomagnetic spike. Two incredible nights back to back. Follow along for the next one.

Oh Canada ❤️🇨🇦, we stand on guard for thee! One of the benefits of this country's natural beauty. Another stunning night of the Northern Lights cracked on in my backyard overnight.

A red Moon and a green aurora, sharing the sky at the same time! My last video was of the Eclipsed Moon. Now for the Aurora. A deep partial lunar eclipse slid the Moon into Earth's shadow starting at 10:34 pm, dimming and reddening nearly its whole face by greatest eclipse at 12:13 am. Right alongside it, a steady green aurora band built into a full curtain around 12:50 am, driven by a coronal hole's solar wind and a Bz that stayed pointed south for hours. Clouds rolled in after 2 am and shut things down, but a calm, clear sunrise closed it out.

My backyard skies are magical! As if on cue, having returned from a boiling hot European vacation earlier that day, the skies overnight August 17-18 delivered exactly what I'd missed while away. A CME that left the Sun on August 14 finally rolled in overnight, and paired with fast solar wind streaming from a coronal hole, it pushed us into G1 geomagnetic storm territory. Kp hit 5 around 1am, and the sky did not hold back, a pink and green substorm lit up shortly after 10pm and the glow lingered past 3am.
