Spring is in the air! As the majority of the Canada Geese have now moved on the song birds are starting to show up. As I type this intro three more species of summer birds just showed up in our yard. Stay tuned LOL...

A couple weeks ago we went for a drive to the experimental farm to look for a couple owls. After we found them we decided to drive to Brewer Park to see what we could find on the Rideau River. After trekking up and down the river we jumped in the Wings Up mobile and started to head home, but then heard there was a special gull on the Ottawa River near Mud Lake. Of course we went to Mud Lake and got a look at the Glaucous Gull (Too far for pictures). Once mission accomplished we headed home down Carling Ave. and pit stopped on Rifle Road at Shirley's Bay to see if any owls were around. It was a full day of birding across west Ottawa and Nepean.

This started with a Northern Shrike in our back yard in the morning sun. Then at supper time we got a surprise visit from a Coyote in the late afternoon sun. The Coyote must have lost his pack as he was howling in every direction....except for south. Somehow he knew his pack was not south LOL. We have a family of three that hunts our fields daily. This young one must have got separated. Or maybe he is looking for a date, after all, its spring out there. Well at least he provided us with some dinner entertainment!

Jodie and I were on our way to Kemptville to see the kids and decided to drive down Rushmore to see if any straggler migrant owls were around. Sure enough there was a young male Snowy sitting right by the roadside. We drove right bay and then stopped about 150 feet away. Jodie stayed near the truck while I walked past him on the other side of the road in the ditch. It worked out very well as we got totally different angles of most poses. We spent a whopping 5 or 10 minutes taking a few pictures and then hit the road again. Typically once every season or two we get to see an owl near the road. Most of the time they are at least 500 or more feet away from the road.

We booked a tour on this early March Saturday to go searching for Owls with Jon Ruddy from Eastern Ontario Birding. It frickin rained all day off and on making it a slushy wet walk along the trails. We did manage to find 4 species of owls so it was a productive ay despite the crappy weather.

We heard there was Northern Pintail ducks at Mud Lake so we went for a drive to check them out. Even though there was almost 100 Mallards there, these Pintails were easy to spot in a crowd. We got lots of shots of these kool lookin ducks. I have thrown a few together to put here for your viewing pleasure LOL.

The day after we got home from Mexico we learned that Lizzy now flies up to the Tower almost daily at dusk to wait for the darkness to fall upon us so she can go hunting. She had done it a few times in early February so it was kind of expected. Next year the Tower will be wearing a lot more hardware so this might have been a one season show. Can't wait until next winter to see how it unfolds.

On our last full day in Mexico we went down the road to check out a stream that apparently had an Alligator in it. We found it in the stream with a bunch of turtles but the water was black and murky so no good for pictures early in the morning. We did, however find a bunch of different birds that we had not seen on the trails. We thought we nailed it and went back to the resort very pleased with the results. The next day when we are leaving the resort in our airport bus we discovered that if we would have walked 100 feet more past the guard house we would have stumbled onto a pond chocked full of ducks and shorebirds....DOH!!! Now we have to go back here again LOL.

After the lock down was lifted we went for a few more walks down the trail. We didn't find too many "different" birds than we did on our initial walk. It was amazing that after just two days, things pretty much returned to normal. Our highlight was tracking down the owls. They gave us a good run but we found them!!!

After we learned that we were in lockdown we figured we could not go anywhere so we took the camera out to the ocean front beach on our resort and watched the Booby's going back and forth. It kind of remined us of the way the Gannets hunt in Newfoundland. If you are a birder you have to at least once travel to Newfoundland or Central America to witness birds turning themselves into torpedoes and diving into the ocean and then coming up with a fish. This is one of those things that never gets old.
