During the devastating Black Saturday bushfires, wildlife conservation efforts were pushed to their limits across Victoria.
|
At Healesville Sanctuary, emergency plans were put into action to protect vulnerable and endangered species. As fires threatened surrounding areas, a number of at-risk animals were carefully evacuated to Melbourne Zoo, ensuring their survival during one of Australia’s worst natural disasters.
|
This rapid response highlighted the critical role zoos and sanctuaries play, not just in conservation, but in crisis protection when wildlife faces immediate danger.

Behind the scenes at Healesville Sanctuary is one of Australia’s most important wildlife hospitals.
|
The Australian Wildlife Health Centre treats around 2,000 sick and injured native animals every year, from kangaroos and koalas to birds of prey and reptiles.
|
During major bushfire events, the centre becomes a frontline emergency facility, caring for wildlife affected by burns, smoke inhalation, and habitat loss. Its work not only saves individual animals, but also supports the recovery of entire ecosystems.

Once on the brink of extinction, Victoria’s state bird was down to fewer than 50 individuals in the wild.
|
Thanks to the conservation efforts of Zoos Victoria, including critical breeding programs at Healesville Sanctuary, the critically endangered Helmeted Honeyeater has been given a second chance.
|
Over 300 birds have been bred in captivity and released back into protected habitats, helping to rebuild wild populations and restore balance to their ecosystem.

In 1943, something extraordinary happened at Healesville Sanctuary.
|
For the first time in history, a platypus was successfully bred in captivity, an achievement that remains incredibly rare even today. With their highly specific habitat needs and sensitivity to stress, platypus are one of the most difficult mammals in the world to breed under human care.
|
This breakthrough not only marked a global first, but also positioned Healesville as a leader in platypus research and conservation, knowledge that continues to support the protection of this unique species in the wild.

During my travels I was incredibly fortunate to be invited along by my brother to capture images on a guided tour of Healesville Sanctuary where he had been volunteering, just outside of Melbourne, Australia.
|
It was truly inspirational being able to see in person the passion and knowledge that he has with the animals and conservation work while at the sanctuary.
|
The upcoming posts will focus on Healesville Sanctuaries history and ongoing conservation efforts.
|
Founded in 1920 by Australian anatomist Dr. Colin MacKenzie, the site was originally established as a research institute focused on studying Australia’s unique native animals. It sits on land connected to the historic Coranderrk Aboriginal Station, a significant Aboriginal reserve with deep cultural history.
|
By 1934, the site evolved into Healesville Sanctuary as we know it today, opening its doors to the public while continuing its mission of wildlife research and conservation.

The name Up Helly Aa comes from a mix of Scots and Old Norse — reflecting Shetland’s deep Scandinavian roots.

-

“Up” is used in the sense of something being finished or brought to an end (from Old Norse uppi).
“Helly” relates to a holy day or festive period, likely from Old Norse helgr, meaning a holiday.
“Aa” is thought to mean “all” in Scots dialect.

-

Put together, Up Helly Aa essentially means “the end of all the holidays”, marking the close of the traditional Yule season and the final farewell to Christmas festivities in Lerwick.

For much of its modern history, the main Up Helly Aa in Lerwick was traditionally male-only, with women excluded from marching squads. However, several rural festivals across Shetland have been more inclusive for years.

-

A milestone moment came in 2015, when the South Mainland festival appointed its first female Jarl, a significant step in the event’s evolving story. Then, in 2023, Lerwick officially lifted restrictions on women joining squads, opening the procession to broader participation while maintaining its long-standing traditions.

Led by the chief guizer — the “Jarl” — a role earned after 15 years on the festival committee, Up Helly Aa is a celebration built on tradition and dedication, with just one new committee member elected each year.

-

The torchlit procession reaches its dramatic finale as a replica Viking longship is set ablaze — a powerful tribute to Shetland’s Norse heritage.

-

Celebrated in eleven locations, including Lerwick and Scalloway, the night continues as squads visit local halls to perform skits, songs, and dances at lively private parties.

After the Napoleonic Wars, returning soldiers, restless and inspired by the grand spectacles they’d witnessed abroad, helped reshape the celebrations in Lerwick.

-

As concerns grew over safety and heavy drinking, the festival evolved, transforming into a torchlit tribute to Shetland’s proud Viking heritage.

-Up Helly Aa-

-

In Lerwick, Up Helly Aa grew from old Yule traditions where young men would drag tar barrels set alight through the streets at Christmas and New Year.

-

What began as fiery winter mischief evolved in to what now is the spectacular Viking fire festival that the Scottish Island town is known for today, a torchlit celebration of Shetland’s Norse heritage.
