Right now, somewhere in Canada, a barred owl is calling into smoke, trying to find its mom. Somewhere else, a nest has gone silent forever. These aren’t statistics. They’re lives.

You can tell this Barred Owl mama is fast asleep by her eyelids. Owls have three eyelids: the top blinks, the bottom closes when they sleep, and the third is a translucent nictitating membrane that sweeps diagonally across the eye to protect and clean it. In this photo, her bottom eyelid is closed, so she’s peacefully dreaming. 🥹

Their home is burning, their food is disappearing, and the smoke makes it hard to breathe. If they south, they may escape the flames only to face the Barred Owl removal plan. Can you imagine being unwanted everywhere you go?

On the West Coast of the United States, they are eliminating the parents and the babies are left to starve. This is animal cruelty.

Every night, Barred Owl moms and dads are lured from the safety of their forests by recordings of their own hoots. They never return. Their babies are left waiting, starving, with no one coming home.
