NEXT WEEK - I am very excited to be teaching a 4 day workshop on the Wet Plate Collodion process (making Tintypes!) at .CA in Ottawa. It’s always a rewarding experience sharing this process with others and watching their excitement as they develop and fix their first Tintypes.

Tech Talk: This portrait was taken with a lens that uses the Petzval design. This design was invented in 1840 and had a couple interesting features for its time.

- First lens to be designed using mathematic calculations

- Blazing fast apertures of around f4 (compared previous designs of around f11)

- A trade off to its speed is its “field curvature” which means it cannot focus the entire image onto a flat plane. Its focal plane was curved which allowed only the center part of the image to be focused properly. This is what gives them their signature “swirly” effect when rendering backgrounds.

Hippocampus….no not the part of the brain…it’s also the scientific genus name for Seahorses. Coming from the Ancient Greek hippokampos, hippos meaning “horse” and kampos meaning ”sea monter”. Thanks Wikipedia 😉.
