Despite the beautiful positioning of this heron's wings as it came in for a landing, this is actually a sad photo. I was watching this nest for a while before the parent arrived. I could definitely see at least two chicks periodically moving around, as well as the fluffy body of a third chick who appeared to be sleeping on the right edge of the nest. However, when the parent arrived, it became clear that this poor chick was not going to wake up. Only two beaks reached up out of the nest 😥

I took another visit to the great blue heron rookery I found in the County of Leeds & The Thousand Islands on Saturday morning.
