A bit about us: We are an Ottawa-based, Eastern Ontario-wide, registered charitable and non-profit dog rescue, with a mission to help find forever homes for as many island dogs as possible! We are a foster-based rescue. What that means is that all our adoptable dogs live with a foster home prior to being adopted. This gives us a chance to temperament test the dogs and really learn their personalities so that we can fit them with a suitable home. To date, we have placed close to 100 dogs in their forever homes! What is a Potcake?
Potcake (or Jampup - Jamaica, Pure Island Dog - Roatan, Native Antiguan Dog - Antigua) is the name given to the feral island dogs of the islands. On these islands, litters of puppies as well as lone puppies and older dogs are often found wandering." Potcakes" can range in size anywhere from 25 pounds – 70 pounds, but most mature to about 35-55 pounds as adults. They are wonderful, loyal and intelligent dogs that make amazing pets. Tens of thousands of these dogs have been re-homed in Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

Please meet Uno! He was rescued late last night, on the side of the road in Roatan:( we thought he was dead as he was not moving at all..He had hot oil poured all over his side by some horrible human being... he has heartworm, ehrlichia, a bad upper respiratory and sinus infection and an eye infection dental disease and was covered in fleas ticks and lice :( . He is now safely with the amazing Dr Calderon in La Ceiba, Honduras, who will get him feeling better and ready to travel home to us in Canada. Every single penny helps. Thank you everyone for your amazing support!!! Please share!!!

Well 2016 is finally coming to a close.. Its been a tough year for me, losing my mom affected me in ways that I NEVER anticipated.. So with that I want to THANK each and every client that stayed loyal, patient and kind while I was working through the grief. I appreciate you all more than words could ever express. Im ready to say goodbye to 2016 and welcome a brand new year! LOTS of amazing changes coming to JHP this year! What is a Potcake and a Jampup?

They were given this name because the locals would feed them the caked remains of the cooking pot of their “rice & peas”. On these islands, litters of puppies as well as lone puppies and older dogs are often found wandering. They are often rescued by tourists while on vacation. Potcakes can range in size anywhere from 35 pounds – 70 pounds, but most mature to about 45-55 pounds as adults. They are wonderful, loyal and intelligent dogs that make amazing pets. Tens of thousands of these dogs have been re-homed in Canada, the U.S. and Europe.
Jampup is the name given to the feral island dogs found in Jamaica. Their name is pretty self -explanatory – they are pups from Jamaica! Jampups have evolved into a breed of dogs that are smart, highly trainable, loyal and very sweet. On these islands, litters of puppies as well as lone puppies and older dogs are often found wandering. They are often rescued by tourists while on vacation. Jampups tend to be on the smaller side – averaging about 35-75lbs, but most mature to between 40-50 pounds as adults.
