Very excited and honoured to share that our film, Nivingajuliat, has been selected to play at imagineNATIVE film festival as a part of the shorts program “Revitalized Legends”, on June 4 and will also be available through their online programming on June 8.

Nivingajuliat (meaning wall hanging in Inuktitut) follows my talented friend  making one of her latest wall hangings sharing the story of the sea goddess, Sedna, but updated through her own lens making the heroines in her artwork self-sufficient, empowered women, free from violence. Coming from a legacy of renowned artists, she reflects on continuing and updating traditions passed down in her great grandmother (Jessie Oonark) and grandmother’s (Victoria Mamnguqsualuk) artwork. Nyá:wen to  for their support in the creation of this film for their ongoing series “Artists at Agnes” and  for her beautiful cinematography and mentorship 💖

If you’re looking for a nice Saturday afternoon read…Tomson Highway’s musical “Rose” is hitting the stage at the NAC’s Indigenous Theatre at the end of the month. It was such a pleasure to spend an afternoon with Tomson at his home in Gatineau earlier this month. A theatre legend, and as hilarious, witty, and intelligent as I imagined he would be, but also exceptionally warm. Aisling Murphy writes a wonderful article about his life and career culminating in this decades-in-the-making feat of a production with 20 Indigenous actors and a six-piece band. “God put us on this planet to laugh,” he says after an afternoon of laughter. “We’re here to have a good time, to laugh until we cry. I’m trying, in my own humble way, to use music to break through the noise – to ensure that women have dignity, to return dignity back to the women from whom it was taken. In Rose, they win. We win,” writes Murphy .murph. In print and online today . Link in my bio

While communities have variations on the spelling of Manoomin (Manomin, Mnomin, Mnoomin), they all carry a similar translation. To the Anishinaabeg, Manoomin is “the good berry” or “the good seed” and is an important grain that they have cared for, relied on for sustenance and honoured in ceremony since their migration to the region thousands of years ago, when they came in search of the prophesied “food that grows on the water.” Manoomin continues to offer a path for the Anishinaabeg today — now to a sense of belonging, cultural connection and fulfillment of their original instructions from the Creator to be caretakers of the land and waters. When they translate Manoomin as “the good berry,” the “goodness” that the name refers to is the beneficial relationship to the Anishinaabeg and all their relations. They truly mean that this seed represents only goodness: for your body, for the animals and for the environment.

Within that sense of community are also the non-human relatives that benefit from sharing their environment with healthy Manoomin patches, including many species of birds that feast on and help to spread Manoomin in their beaks and feathers as they travel to different waterways. In return, the plant provides protection, habitat, breeding areas and nesting materials. “Thousands of species are partially or tangentially dependent on Manoomin,” says Musgrave. It also filters phosphates, nitrogen, potassium and other nutrients that flow from farmlands down into our rivers and waterways. Manoomin, says Musgrave, is “the kidneys and the liver of our waterways.”

It has been a labour of love, spending time with these awesome fellas in Curve Lake, Alderville, and Hiawatha First Nations, learning about Manoomin for the last couple of years. I am so grateful for the amount of time they gave me: the hours of stories they shared, the long chats about language, the canoe rides, and the Manoomin they gifted me that I’ve cooked up with my family. Nyá:wen to my amazing editor Katie Doreen , who understood the nuances of this story and made sure the voices from the community shone through in this piece. I’m so proud to say that my first story for Canadian Geographic magazine is here: a lovely 12-page spread in the September/October issue. I will share a link in my bio once the story is posted online, but you can find it on news stands now! More photos to come over the month.. happy Manoomin harvest!

“Even with a ball cap on, Ryerson Whetung still squints looking out over Chemong Lake in the intensity of the early-September evening sun. “Our waterways have never been surrendered,” he says, as he makes himself comfortable in the back of his uncle Billy’s canoe. Through the tall grass-like plants behind him peek glimpses of cottages on the shore across from Curve Lake First Nation.

As Ryerson waits for his uncle to join him, he quietly opens a leather pouch decorated with intricate beadwork. Removing a pinch of medicine and reaching down, he opens his hand to release an offering of asemaa (to***co) atop the shimmering ripples, as small bugs dance along the surface of the water. “Our Ojibwe bands down here, we put [into our treaties] that we did not want a dwelling within 20 metres of the waterway, and that was to be able to protect the waters,” he says, referencing Treaty 20, also known as the Rice Lake Purchase, signed in 1818.

“Without the land, without the water, without the animals and without the Manoomin, we’re not Ojibwe people,” says Ryerson. “Every time we go and harvest Manoomin, we are acting in resistance, we are acting in resilience, and we’re thriving as a people.””

Hello, sun in my face.
Hello, you who make the morning
and spread it over the fields
and into the faces of the tulips
and the nodding morning glories,
and into the windows of, even, the

I had such a wonderful time photographing author and botanist Diana Beresford-Kroeger as she walked me around her property sharing stories of some of the trees in the impressive forest she’s grown around her home in Merrickville.

In her new book, “Our Green Heart”, she shares a plan to save our forests, one acorn at a time. “Planting one is simple enough,” writes Erin Anderssen. “And the results of a collective effort, Beresford-Kroeger argues, will eventually produce a harvest of grand old oaks, ‘a rescue crop’ to save humanity from itself.”
