FUN FACTS: Tulips first bloomed in Holland in spring of 1594 after Carolus Clusius had planted bulbs in the fall of 1593 in Leiden University’s new botanical garden, of which he was the director. Clusius started creating many different colour variations of the flower, and he discovered that a viral infection in his tulips created streaks in the petals. His beautiful and unique tulips became highly sought after in Holland, leading to Tulip Mania between 1634 and 1637. Tulips became the most expensive flower in the world and the Dutch often traded tulips as a form of currency. Now, the Netherlands are the largest producer and exporter of tulips in the world - they produce and export almost 3 billion bulbs each year! 🌷💐💶

FUN FACTS: Twist #1 - Even though these look like peonies, they are actually Double Tulips (aka. Peony tulips). Twist #2 - Tulips (Tulipa) belong to the lily (Liliaceae) family. Twist #3 - There are approximately 75 species of Tulipa, with 3,000 registered varieties classified into 14 groups based on shape, size, and blooming period. Are you confused enough yet? Twist #4 - Most people associate tulips with Holland, but they actually originate in Southern Europe and across Central Asia, which is why the name “tulip” is thought to originate from the Persian word for “turban” to which it resembles. Tulips weren’t introduced to the Dutch until the 16th century, leading to “Tulip Mania” when prices of bulbs sky-rocketed. Talk about a complex flower with a twisted history!! 🤔💐🌷Now you know. 🤓

Now that it’s (finally) spring in Ottawa, I can add some much-needed colour to this account!! 💐🌷🌼

Happy Spring Equinox! 🌸☀️
FUN FACT: Gray jays (Perisoreus canadensis) are actually more closely related to the magpie genus (Cyanopica) than to other jays, which is probably why they are so smart. One of its nicknames, “whiskey jack,” originated from Cree, Algonquin, and Menominee mythologies about a trickster named Wisakedjak because grey jays are known to befriend humans and take their food. This is why they are also called “lumberjacks” or “camp robbers” in some areas of North America.
