Last weekend I checked off another bucket list backpacking trip, the Rockwall in Kootenay National Park. The larches were halfway through turning, and it was a special experience to enjoy the golden-green alpine forest in solitude. We spent four days on the trail, starting at Paint Pots, staying at Helmet Falls, Tumbling Creek, and finally the beautiful Floe Lake campground.

Last week I was fortunate enough to go to Mount Assiniboine provincial park, BC. We did the through hike from Sunshine Meadows to Mount Shark, spending six nights along the trail.

March 24, 2023. We missed most of the early show from around 9 pm but decided to try out luck and wait in the countryside, watching as all the other vehicles drove home. The clouds rolled in from the south and we weren't sure if we would get a show, but we waited. Around midnight, first, a faint band appeared, then suddenly the lights cascaded down from above, filling the sky with colour. The Aurora was pulsing, breathing as if it were alive.

We took the Icefields Parkway home, but got distracted by the scenery, stopping for photos every chance we had. The sun was setting as we got to the Athabasca glacier.
I walked partway up the path to take these photos, experimenting with different compositions and foregrounds as the light changed and the katabatic winds blew fiercely against by face.
We’ll have to return to see the southern half of the Icefields parkway in winter, but I’m glad we stayed to watch the sun set across the rugged landscape.

Here are some photos from inside Maligne Canyon. Small streams from a network of underground caves flow down the canyon walls, even in the middle of winter. This results in large frozen ice formations, on which you’ll often see ice climbers.
It’s a unique experience to stand at the bottom of a river canyon. When my family was here in the early summer large amounts of rushing water shook the entire canyon and the bridges above. Looking up you are able to see the interesting shapes that the river has carved in the limestone over time.

Here are a few landscape photos from Jasper. I love how big the first two photos feel, looking across the Athabasca river valley. The conditions at pyramid lake were cloudy, but the mountain still peaked through as the light faded.
The mountains in the winter have so much more texture in the winter as the snow gives all the cracks and ridges definition in the low sunlight.
