Before I picked up my camera, I spent years working alongside children with developmental delays, disabilities and life threatening illnesses. I sat with their families, I watch them love each other through the hardest things imaginable.

Those families and children taught me something I carry into every single session: ordinary moments are the ones you miss most.

Sitting with families who would have given anything for one more ordinary day together forever shaped the photographer I am to this day.

This is why I photography the way I do.

A good reminder of why photos matter even if it was absolutely down pouring and it wasn’t what you were envisioning, they will have an impact much bigger than you could ever imagine. This is the reminder I received from a client yesterday who has given me permission to share.

RIP sweet Bentley - you were such a beautiful dog to capture.

Hi Terri,

I just wanted to send you a message thanking you again for our beautiful tree farm photos. We lost our sweet Bentley this week quite suddenly and your pictures have given us so much comfort this week. They will forever be our last family photos with our sweet boy 🐾 ❤️

I know you are on your own journey with your sweet guy, so I didn’t want this to be upsetting in away way, but just show our deep gratitude for what you gave us. What a gift.

Do you remember those Choose Your Own Adventure books?

Where you got to decide what happened next…

where the story shifted depending on the path you chose.

That’s what I keep thinking about lately.

What if your photo session felt like that?

Not posed.
Not forced.
Not following a script.
But guided…
with space to lean into what your family actually feels like in that moment.

We can run with the chaos.
Or slow everything down.
Or sit right in the in-between.

Because the best moments?
They’re never planned exactly the same way twice.

This is your story.
Your pace.
Your adventure.

Let’s go on an adventure together!

I’ve spent the past 2 days crying, laughing, connecting and learning with some of the very best and most inspiring photographers that I have admired from afar and have slowly over the years got to meet and open up to in person. This was my 3rd conference and each time I go I grow a little more into the photographer I know I want to become.

I’m very much an introvert especially in group settings so incase you didn’t see me I was the quiet one in the corner soaking in every moment and just in awe that I was apart of this community of passionate driven creatives. Seriously to evenly be seen some of these photographers makes me feel apart of something that I didn’t really think or know I was or could be apart of. Hello imposter syndrome :) An unexpected hug, someone remembering my name from the previous year or just another photographer who can completely understand or resonate with the season I am in my career is things that I truly appreciate and am grateful for. Some of these photographers have witnessed me at my most vulnerable stage and there is something powerful in that.

I made the switch to go full time in photography 15 years ago (which is crazy to even say out loud) I often feel like a dinosaur in the field and at the same time light times behind. I’ve burnt myself out too many times to count including recently, have went through every preset and trend known to man. I am by far not the most technical photographer, my editing is continuously being refined and I’ve wanted to throw in the towel more than once in my lifetime but what keeps me going is this community and knowing deep down the direction I want to go with my craft.

This field can be very isolating but I’m very thankful for for creating a conference where you are surrounded and supported by others.

More of this

PLAY

Play with light
Play with focus
Play with kids
Play with connection

I want to step away from typical and create the magic of the unexpected

I want to make the ordinary interesting and step away from what’s already been done.
