New Zealand has some of the most incredible sunrises and sunsets we’ve ever seen 🌄

Here are a few of our favourite spots to catch some golden hour rays:

1️⃣ Lake Tekapo at sunrise — where the pastel colours in the sky match the lupins on the ground!
2️⃣ Roy’s Peak at sunrise — this popular sunrise hike is worth the effort but are you prepared to wake up at 3am to catch this view??
3️⃣ Alex K**b at sunset — we camped overnight and woke up for sunrise as well but the colours were much better at sunset!
4️⃣ Ho**er Hut at sunset — we only had time to hike the Ho**er Valley Track at sunset but think it might be a great spot for sunrise as well 🤔

Would you wake up at 3am to hike Roys Peak??

We knew that Roys Peak in Wānaka was a popular sunrise hike but we didn’t expect just 𝘏𝘖𝘞 popular it actually would be! We arrived at the trailhead parking lot at around 3:30am and it was already more than 3/4 full 🤯 Looking up, we could see at least 30-40 headlights bobbing along as people walked up this steep trail.

We might be the only competitive psychopaths that do this when we see people hiking ahead of us but I looked at Marcie and asked “how many do you think we can pass?” she responded with “35” (!?)

Challenge accepted.

We started our hike at 3:45am and with the sunrise scheduled for 5:59am—we would have to hustle. We did just that. We made it to the lookout at 5:30am and decided to stay here to watch the sunrise. In hindsight, we wish we would have went to the actual summit for sunrise and then stopped at the lookout on the way back down as the crowd seen in the photo above was pretty much nonexistent after the sunrise!

And if you’ve read this far and want to know what the final tally was… it was 38 😏

We were stuck in cloud cover for at least 3 hours after we set up camp and weren’t sure we’d even get to see this view before sunset. After our third episode of Outer Banks (because we didn’t bring anything else to do 😅) the inside of our tent started to glow and we rushed out to see our first cloud inversion before they cleared and gave us this incredible view!
