Can I tell you a secret? I have been wearing maternity clothes from this owner's stores since high school 👀 and no, not because I was pregnant in high school (I was not)
But because I LOVE clothes that fit well.
Shirts with a bit more length, bottoms with a bit more stretch, the fricken cardigans and dresses this woman brings in?!
(My collection is embarrassingly large)
If you are pregnant or nursing, girl go treat yourself!!!!
But if you are like me and hate buying clothes without trying them on, or a little birdie in your ear says "stop supporting big corporations and support a local mom instead", or you just like the experience of actual customer service from an actual human – Go shop at this store!!
Because YES it is a maternity store, THANK GOODNESS Red Deer has somewhere you can go try things on, and buy clothes that let you feel a bit normal while you grow a human! But it is also literally just an adorable local shop that sells comfy and cute clothes, and each purchase supports another local mamas dream of providing comfortable clothes to mamas throughout all stages of motherhood.
This is a really hard post to write…
I've started this post so many times, and every time I struggle to find the right words.
STARTING NOW WE WILL BE REDUCING HOURS TO 4 DAYS A WEEK, and we will be having a HUGE SALE.
The truth is, our little maternity store is struggling.
And saying that out loud makes my heart hurt.
For 15 years, I have poured my heart into this business. I have opened and closed through personal struggles, COVID, and an ever-changing market.
We've watched countless moms walk through our doors excited, nervous, uncomfortable, overwhelmed, and sometimes just looking for someone who understands.
We've helped moms find something that actually fits their growing belly. We've helped them find something beautiful when they weren't feeling beautiful. We've helped new moms find nursing clothes, baby shower gifts, and those little things that make this crazy journey into motherhood just a little bit easier.
We've laughed with you. We've listened to you. We've celebrated pregnancies with you.
And somewhere along the way, many of our customers stopped feeling like customers and started feeling like friends. ❤️
That's why this is so incredibly difficult.
We recently lost another one of our manufacturers to Amazon.
Unfortunately, this is becoming the reality for small specialty retailers like us. Manufacturers are increasingly choosing to sell through large online marketplaces, and we simply cannot compete with Amazon's prices, selection, convenience, or advertising power.
We know people love Amazon. We understand why.
We shop there too.
But what Amazon can't offer is what we have tried so hard to provide.
You can't walk into Amazon and have someone say:
"Let me help you find the right size."
You can't try something on and have someone honestly tell you:
"That one isn't quite right. Try this one instead."
You can't sit down and have a conversation with someone who understands that sometimes, during pregnancy, you just want to feel like yourself again.
That's what we've tried to be.
A place for women.
A place for moms.
A place where you could come in, take a breath, try things on, and know someone was there to help.
But unfortunately, love alone doesn't pay the bills.
We have spent thousands of dollars on advertising, trying to bring people through our doors. We have tried so many things to keep this store going.
And despite all of that, there simply aren't enough people coming through our physical doors to make it possible to continue operating the way we have been.
I wish I could tell you this doesn't matter.
But it does.
A lot.
Every time someone chooses to shop locally, it matters.
Every visit matters.
Every purchase matters.
Every share, recommendation, review, and referral matters.
Because behind a small business isn't a giant corporation.
It's people.
It's someone's dream.
It's someone's time, money, heart, and years of hard work.
And for us, this store has been a dream.
So, for now, we're not closing.
We're going to fight a little longer.
We're going to try to stay open through the Christmas season and see where we are then.
Maybe this will be the beginning of a new chapter.
Maybe, with enough support from our community, we can turn things around.
And maybe we'll eventually have to make the heartbreaking decision to close our physical doors.
I honestly don't know.
And that's the part that makes me the saddest.
I don't want to look back someday and wonder if we could have saved it.
So, from the bottom of my heart, please help us try. ❤️
