I've been photographing this family since their parents got engaged and it has been SO COOL to watch them grow! This 3 hour session was a snapshot of their busy daily lives - snacks, walks in the park, more snacks, recovery from said walk in the park, and more snacks. Busy, growing, exploring little ones!

Sometimes my favorite sessions are the ones where we don't plan a thing.
Together, Sabrina and I decided we would capture a typical morning at home with the kids. Not an itinerary in sight.
I have been wanting to photograph this climbing wall for a while now, because it is seriously the COOLEST play area for kids. And the kids did not disappoint on it - they swung, spun, sprawled and tangled themselves into the weirdest shapes. Fabulous! Then snack, reading and time for the youngest to nap. The everyday moments, captured in all their weird and wonderful glory.

Over the holidays I shot a quick "Day In The Life of My Cats" for my local photography club. As you can see, the cats are pretty sure they own the new puzzle board Keenan got for Christmas :) Here are a few of the images I submitted.

I love how today's couples are finding their own unique ways of celebrating. This beautiful pairing had gotten married a few weeks earlier in a very intimate ceremony, then had a separate party to celebrate with close friends and family. Their relaxed, laid back plans were perfect for a documentary approach and I was so honoured to get to share in the celebration with them. Throw a few kidlets into the mix and there will always be some fun to be found...

I had the absolute pleasure of photographing a 100th birthday party a few weeks ago. What a milestone! It was my first time meeting someone who was 100 years old, and she made it look pretty damn good. I was equally tickled to observe her enjoying her favorite drink - a glass of Bailey's on ice - with her birthday cake.

Paula and I regularly exchange photo sessions. It's been really cool to watch her girls grow up. We have transitioned from little kids running around crazy to almost teenagers. And I gotta say, the documentary approach works equally as good for both groups - no stress, no cajoling, just families enjoying time together.
For this session they chose to play on their new trampoline, do some art, go for ice cream and watch their family show - "Friends". You might think that watching TV doesn't leave you much to photograph, but they are some of my favorite shots from the session! Why? Because it is THEIR thing - they are doing what THEY enjoy. And it shows.

Pets are Family too!

I love highlighting the bonds between people and their pets. Kids especially have such intense relationships with their animals. They are their confidants, their companions and endless sources of entertainment. The bonds run deep and knowing that they are finite make them that much more important to document.

Family Documentary photo sessions are the perfect way to capture your unique family dynamics - pets included. The only thing harder to wrangle than a 2 year old for a traditional family portrait is a dog (or multiple dogs!). Make it easy on yourself - do documentary!

Kids are weird, and I love it.
When documentary photographers talk about their "voice" they are referring to the things they are drawn towards photographing. If you aren't sure what your "voice" is, it is recommended that you go through all your images and try to find the patterns within it. Some people are drawn to the quiet, reflective moments, for others it may be certain colours or types of light.
When I look through my images I find I am most often drawn to the humorous moments. The ones that you double take at, or that bring a smile to your face. The ones that make you think, oh yes, I've can relate to the ridiculousness of this situation. Life is weird and funny and above all INTERESTING.

When a friend mentioned her cat was expecting kittens I pounced on the opportunity to visit - with camera in hand. This 3 hour session gave us enough time to play those kittens out and then enjoy the cuddles and snuggles when they needed to sleep.

3 Hour Session: I showed up to document this family's hike in Canmore and was treated to an upscale dining experience (including nutella and corn pops on rice cakes!) by some very savy entrepreneurs.
