The church of my childhood hasn’t changed at all.
Located in Swan Plain, SK is the Ascension of our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church, built in 1938.
My great-parents were part of the founding members and are listed as the most generous benefactors of the parish.

The beloved but long-abandoned St. Mary’s church near Endeavour was blessed, then demolished in spring 2025 after years of disrepair.
The steeple from the church, which was built in 1959–60, was moved to a new chapel constructed on the church property in 2024.
The church had become a safety hazard and liability. Yet the history of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church will live on through the new chapel and the well-maintained cemetery, which continues to be used.

This video we made last summer while visiting during our honeymoon (we were staying at an AirBnB just down the road) has been gaining a lot of attention lately!
People from the church community saw it and my video is now being displayed on the church’s official website, which is pretty cool!
The Cook’s Creek church is quite a tourist destination in the summers, for obvious reasons. So if you’re ever northeast of Winnipeg, be sure to check it out!
