Taking Flight - this beautiful snowy owl was spooked by a truck that was flying down the country road and spitting up gravel. Having happened once already that day, this time I was ready and managed to capture her with wings spread wide as she was taking off.

This image was captured from a respectful distance with my telephoto lens through the open window of my car, making her appear much closer than she actually was. Image taken January 2026.

Always in awe when I see these regal birds. This image is cropped a fair amount as I had to zoom in from where I was parked at the side of the road and he was perched in the middle of the field. As I cull through more images from this day, I'm hoping to find a few more worth sharing. I hope you enjoy!

I call her Golden Eyes. What a beauty and perfection of nature. Look at those talons!! I guess you can say that since my first ever sighting in January of this year I have become obsessed with snowy owls. So blessed to keep seeing them each time I go out, but know that soon they will be heading back north.

This majestic bald eagle was discovered sitting on the branch of a barren tree in the middle of a farmer's field that ran parallel to the highway. I spent a couple hours watching him as I sat awkwardly in my car, raising my heavy lens now and again to take a shot through the passenger side window. I kept waiting for him to take flight (I even sang to him!!) but he just kept sitting. After tiring of playing the "who's going to fold first" game, I set down my camera for just a mere moment to get some feeling back in my arms ... and that's when he decided to take flight. Until next time Mr. Eagle!

As a landscape/wildlife photographer, I never know what I will capture on any given outing (if anything at all). On this specific outing I had high hopes of sighting a snowy owl. After several hours driving up and down country roads scanning telephone poles, fences, and open fields, I came up empty. On my drive home I saw this prairie wolf (aka coyote) and caught a few quick snaps before he trotted off. Made for a great ending to my day.

"A Walk in Fish Creek Park" - January 2026.

As I was trying to capture the beauty of the ice covered tree lined path, a jogger (dog jogger?) entered my camera's line of sight. Instead of waiting for her to exit the pathway, I decided to include her in the shot as it made for a more interesting image.

I stumbled upon the entranceway to Laughing Horse Ranch at the end of a glorious day of shooting, just as the light was turning to golden. Had to stop and take a shot of the contrasting blue sky, the rime frost on the trees and the soft light of sunset.

Which of these two images do you prefer - color or black and white? I'd love to get your feedback. Let me know your preference by dropping me a short message in the comments below and the reason why you like one over the other.

While capturing images of the beautiful rime ice last month, I spotted a bald eagle perched on an upper branch of a crystalized tree. The eagle suddenly launched off the branch with such force it left an avalanche of ice crystals in its wake.

So lucky to have witnessed the power and beauty of this regal bird in action.

After resting in a partially covered field, this snowy owl spread her angel owl wings, lifting off in search of her next prairie snack.

This image was taken from a respective distance using a telephoto lens from the open window of my parked car and has been cropped during post processing appearing much closer than she actually was.

For several days our landscape was painted in rime ice, which transformed our city and surrounding area into a winter wonderland. Although the light was very flat the first couple of days, I still had to get out to try and capture some of that magic through my lens.

This turned out to be one of my favorites.

During a recent trip to Saskatchewan, I caught a glimpse of something white out in the field. We turned around and, sure enough, it was a male snowy owl. He was quite far out and I didn't have the right lens on my camera to get a decent close up. I may not have gotten a great shot, but the unexpected sighting truly made my day.
