Black Mesa. The afternoon was going to be stormy so we went out to see if we could catch the light. We ended up around the Black Mesa area just south of Los Alamos. Here are a few favourites from that area. As we started to drive home, we could see the rainbow forming over Black Mesa, however it faded as I got into a position for a photo. We left and went on our merry way, only to find that the sun reappeared, as did the rainbow. A quick turn around and back to the photo spot for a second chance!

"Coyote Fence" Santa Fe, New Mexico. I had passed this fence earlier in the day and as I drove away I thought that there is a great photo in that fence. I had to go back and find it!

"Santa Cruz Lake". The forecast was for storms and partial sun starting about 4.00pm. Just what landscape photographers love. So we headed out to so a location that would give us a northern view and an interesting foreground. Little did I know how beautiful this spot was going to be. As we arrived, the storm clouds started building over the lake and the rain started to fall accentuating the colours and contrast of the land. The colour version of this was lovely but Ansel Adams look of the black and white was just too much to resist. Got to love the midwest!

"Pathway to another world". The Kiva was the ceremonial chamber used by the Pueblo people. When you get the opportunity to descend into one of these sacred chambers, you start to feel the connections to another world.

"Our Lady of the Light" Tonight is another super moon, however the weather in New Mexico is deteriorating and so I did not think I could risk missing the opportunity to go out and photograph, and so we went last night instead. We were still chasing the weather with the approaching storm threatened to ruin the occasion. We had scouted this old church (Our Lady of the light) close to Pecos earlier in the day, but the original composition did not quite work. After some desperate scrambling up the hill side, we found this wonderful sceen. It was a challenge to photograph and compose due to the vast range of tones and brightness that you get with the full moon. I had Kate paint the church with her iPhone during the 15s foreground exposure, and then took a second for the moon and clouds.

Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (C/2023 A3) comet as seem from Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was only after chasing the comet for 3 evenings that I managed to get some clear skies and the comet soon after the setting sun.

"The Rosen Bridge" I think that of all the nights I have been up waiting for the Aurora, this is by far the best I have ever seen in the the Kootenays.

"Columbia River Aurora" As soon as I got the Aurora alert, I headed out to one of the northern looking locations by the Columbia River. At first there was a layer of cloud covering the horizon but as the storm intensified, the clouds dissipated and the colours of the Aurora were clearly visible. I try to apply the same principles to my night photography as I do to daytime photos with interesting foregrounds and leading lines. I was so close to the rocks that I had to do a 3 shot focus stack to get them sharp and then blend then together, adding in the sky to the final blend.
