Wow! What a weekend!

I had such a wonderful time capturing Alberta Dental Association’s 3 day Summit in Banff.

An amazing location and the speakers were fantastic. I usually miss everything the speakers talk about because I’m focusing on the photos, but they were so good I even walked away learning something😁

If you missed it this year you have to go next year! It was such a fun and well run event!

Thanks to Lucas Warren and team for brining me out to Banff!

Just a hint of shadows…

I love doing classic headshots on a grey background. They just work so well for so many roles and jobs and instantly give off that professional vibe.

But I also love giving my clients a more modern take on the “classic.”

Going with a darker grey adds more depth to the photo, making a bold statement that you are up to date with the times and confident in your field.

Jesse is a financial planner and wanted a strong headshot but didn’t want to match everyone else.

I also moved the main light over to the side just a few inches to add some nice shadows on the side of his face, giving his headshot a little more contrast while still staying in a very professional tone.

My typical process with clients is that we build your headshot together. I will keep trying different lighting and backgrounds until we find the look that suits you best.

Your job and the market you are trying to reach all play an important part in creating your headshot.

Pick a background. Take the photo. Move on.

But your headshot is positioning whether you think about it or not.

White or grey feels clean and professional.
Dark feels modern and authoritative.
Color shows personality and brand.

None of these are “better.” They just do different jobs.

Here’s a quick tip for my fellow fighters and martial artists.

As a headshot photographer I focus on eyes and have a lot of tips to help my clients get the look that fits their style.

For a fighter promo shot there is a squint trick I use a lot that with a bit more of a chin tuck works perfect for a more stronger look.

If your eyes look flat or unfocused, don’t open them wider. That just makes you look surprised.

Instead, slightly tighten your lower eyelids. Think focus, not aggression.
It gives you a calm, locked-in look that works great for headshots and fight-related photos.

And of course some hard shadows help sell the mood.

Try it before your next photo or walkout.

No extreme retouching. No personality swap. Just intentional choices.

One look is open, approachable, and friendly.
The other is more serious, confident, and leadership-driven.

This is why I push clients to think past “I just need a headshot.”
Your photo should match how you want to show up.

Website, LinkedIn, speaking gigs, media, internal leadership pages. Those are not the same audience.

Most people don’t need one headshot. They need the right one for the situation.
