An image created at dusk, moments after Venus (in the background) and other stars emerged. In the foreground are buds of a mountain ash tree, soon to burst for spring. A few months prior, I recall watching waxwings eating these very bunches of mountain ash berries clean. Past, future and present together. Yay for spring!

I’ve been reflecting on my many days spent wandering through the Wabanki-Acadian forest. Where possible, I add my ecological observations to community science platforms like and to contribute to our collective knowledge of ecosystems and how they may be changing. Taking the time to document and share these observations feels like a small act of thanks for the afternoons spent like the one depicted in the photos above.

This reflection reminds me of the words of Daniel Laughlin, who said “a rare gift that the very subject of study [ecology] can also provide sanctuary in which to find strength”.
