Had the absolute pleasure to take photos for Genevieve at her friends & family opening night of Woven Curated Goods.
What a dream this space is; a creative, welcoming and thoughtfully curated shop. Congratulations to their whole family and to us islanders who now have the pleasure of choosing to shop at a retail store that stands firmly rooted in social causes and justice.

The island couple celebrated their 25th anniversary this year and indulged in family photos to commemorate it! We were delayed a couple times due to the smoke and when we finally were able to make it work the sun was shining and the sky was blue, the day was perfect....and then we arrived at our location and it was so foggy we could barely see across the fields! But you know what? It was perfect! The fog was beautiful and the lighting was still just right and we managed to get some beautiful images for this family.

At the beginning of this school year, as many of you may be aware, there was an terrible incident of racist and misogynistic behaviour at the local high school here where some students started classes wearing offensive T-shirt’s with hateful slogans etc.
As I understand it the school and the school district have followed through on disciplinary action and while this is necessary it also doesn’t fully undo the emotional and mental damage done to our BIPOC neighbours both on this island and off, in nearby communities.
I personally want this island, that is traditional land of the Coast Salish peoples to be inclusive and welcoming of every person and so this is my call to do something, hopefully meaningful and helpful. And while the fundraiser will NOT be directly related in anyway to the events at the school it and conversations with friends has been the catalyst for this idea.
I have searched and searched for local groups or organizations that support the local BIPOC community and truly I cannot find one. I don’t know if my research skills are off but I’m now reaching out to the community at large.
Please send me links to local Salt Spring organizations that work with black, indigenous, POC, LGBTQ, marginalized or immigrant communities. I will be putting together a fundraiser which I will announce shortly and would love to donate to a local group.
Share this with your followers, let’s get the word out and the group names in. I want to work with a group that wants the help, I do not want to presume so if you are part of an organization or group locally who would like to be included in this fundraiser please reach out to me.

Loving these images from tonights photo shoot! I’m not usually a huge fan of saturated colour but sometimes the photos dictate and this family was such a vibrant and colourful group. It’s only fitting their photos should be as well!

Stick with me, it’s long but there’s goodness at the bottom!

As a photographer, I couldn’t help but follow the news out of Ontario this past week about Caramount Pictures refusal to work with a le***an couple for their wedding, citing that they don’t film homosexual weddings.

While this news was disheartening it is also unfortunately all too reminiscent of many other news stories in Canada and the US (and around the world) about discrimination in the wedding industry towards the LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities.

When I started digging more into this particular story I was so saddened to read more and more about how often this happens.
It’s hard for me to fathom being a photographer or a creative of any kind and being a discriminatory do*****ag at the same time. The idea of art and creativity and all the variety we see in this business, it feels like discrimination should be naturally foreign. But that thought comes from a very privileged place.

How many of us can even say they’ve ever once been turned down for a service because they were “straight”...or white...or or or. I suspect very few. My sexuality has NEVER been a factor in anyone’s decision to NOT provide me with a service; it’s worse yet that my sexuality could be someone’s reason TO provide me service. Disgusting.

And so I want to put my business out, loud and proud, as one that supports and loves the LGBTQ+ community; one that supports and loves BIPOC communities; one that will always be a safe space for anyone who has been discriminated against or turned away by a racist, prejudiced business.

So in that spirit I want to put my business where my mouth is. For the remainder of this s**t year we call 2020, if you are a member of a marginalized group and my photography would meet your needs for family, event, maternity or couples photos you will receive my services at only 25% of my reg price. On top of this commitment, 25% of ALL proceeds from all OTHER clients this year will be donated toward a local charity or charities (TBD) that actively support marginalized communities here in BC.
Let’s work together on something meaningful!!
