To continue with the same frosty morning I shared yesterday, here is another shot from the City of Bridges. This is University Bridge with the Delta Bessborough in the background as the sun was climbing higher in the sky.

Well, hi! It's been a long time since I last posted! I have still been avidly taking photos, though now I have about a year's worth of backlog sitting on my drives, and I don’t quite know where to start πŸ˜…. Some would say the logical way would be to go through the photos chronologically, but for some reason, that feels more daunting than going in random order, lol. I am going to try to start sharing more again, but be prepared to get seasonal whiplash 🀭

Today's stop is one of the many bridges that span the South Saskatchewan River in the aptly named "City of Bridges" - Saskatoon. The night prior to this crisp morning shot, my dad and I were driving back from visiting Grandpa, and we noticed how thick the hoar frost was getting. That, of course, meant that we woke up at the crack of silly the next morning to go catch the sun rising over the city. We had a beautiful view of CPR Rail Bridge from RUH, with the pinks and oranges of the rising sun lighting up the frosted trees. The foreground was still in the shade of surrounding buildings, so it made for quite a nice contrast between the cool shadows and the warm highlights. Let me tell you though - ain't nothing colder than a Praire winter! I could not feel my fingers after only being outside for a minute! But you can bet that will not deter me from doing another early winter morning photo drive in the future 😜

γ€Š Beneath the Shadow of the Moon 》

The very noticeable drop in temperature. The rapid descent into darkness. The stars sparking to life in the sky during those short 3 minutes of totality. It was a truly unforgettable day and most definitely worth the drive east.

These are two quick pics from today's amazing event. More to follow!

γ€Š Earth's Rotation β€’ 4222 seconds 》

The little Canon Rebel that could!!

Saturday night looked like it was going to be another jaw-dropping aurora display, similar to the one we saw last Monday night, but it ended up being a bust.

Decided I shouldn't let the clear skies go to waste, so I set up my little ol' Canon Rebel with a freshly charged battery, set the shutter to bulb, and walked away.

An hour and some later, I come back and close the shutter. This is where "the little Canon Rebel that could" comes in. When I closed the shutter, my camera showed the BUSY screen.

Another hour passes, the camera is still showing busy, and I eventually fall asleep while the camera is working. When I woke the next morning, the screen was dark. I tried to turn the camera off and on, but the battery died at some point in the night. Queue me thinking maybe the battery died while the image was saving and I'll have nothing.

Swapped out the battery and turned the camera on. The photo saved! These are the star trails created by a little bit more than an hour of Earth's rotation. 4222 seconds of rotation to be precise πŸ€“

The bright white-ish area in the top half of the image is not a cloud. It's the Milky Way.

γ€Š First Chase β€’ 2023-09-18 β€’ 23:17 》

I've been watching NOAA and various aurora groups throughout the day to see how everyone is interpreting the data as the CME from Saturday arrives. I haven't hit the road yet.

My phone starts buzzing around 9pm. Dad is sending me pictures of what he is currently seeing a couple hours north of me in cottage country. It's here! And it is bright.

In the back of my mind concern bubbles. I've spent too long thinking about if and where I should go, instead of actually going. I bolt out the door, jump in my car, and aim for dark sky about an hour north.

It's 10pm and I've reached my chosen spot. I shut the car lights off, give my eyes some time to adjust, keep my gaze north. I don't see anything. I take a couple test shots, dial in my settings and focus. Okay, it's there, just super faint, even for my camera.

An hour passes. I sit in my car to keep the wind from setting a chill in my bones, firing off shots now and again. I wonder if I'm just that bit too far south to be able to see anyth...

A bright spot flares to life in my peripheral. Surely it's just clouds, or someone pointing a flashlight up into the night sky. It took a minute for me to understand what I was seeing.

I've never seen clouds like that... Clouds do not MOVE like that.

I set my camera on a multi-shot self-timer and let it begin firing off shots.

With my bare eyes I see what looks like dancing clouds, ever so faintly bouncing around on the horizon, and shooting upward. They become more noticeable for very short bursts... 10 seconds here, 30 seconds there. I don't want to blink.

This was one of the brightest points of my night, both literally and figuratively. The first picture is what my camera captured, green and pink/purple glow setting my viewfinder ablaze and my adrenaline sky-rocketing. The second picture is more akin to what I actually saw.

What did I learn from my first true chase? At some point, you just gotta say "to heck with the data" and just go. Take the chance. Go with the flow - which is very much not my thing... I'm a planner! But for this view? I will always give in to spontaneity for this.

Here's to more chasing!

γ€Š Great Blue Heron 》

I have quite the backlog of photos I have been meaning to post, dating back a couple months, that I just haven't gotten around to posting. I have taken a lot of photos, some of which I am very excited to share soon 😁

Many people know I spend a lot of time in search of the local herons. More often than not, I don't end up finding them. Every now and then, I do, and it's quite amazing to watch them hunt.

You can tell the moments before a strike is coming. The heron goes very still, then ever so slowly lowers it head toward the water's surface. If you blink at this point, chances are you'll miss the dive. It's crazy how fast they move.

This picture was a post-fish-catch feather ruffle during the last moments of daylight. I am hoping that before the end of summer, I will be able to snag an inflight/take-off photo similar to that of a couple of summers ago 🀞🏻

γ€Š The Glass Mallard 》

Good morning all! Long time, no post! It's been a busy summer...

This is a photo I snapped along RRT while trying to find the local heron. The surface tension of the water made for an eye-catching glass-encased effect as the mallard repetitively dove just beneath the surface and shot back up again.

This has to be my favourite wildlife photo that I've taken this year. It was one of the last shots of the evening that day. The sun was pretty much gone, so I had to crank my ISO and risk losing some image quality. It may not be the sharpest photo, but the composition was worth spending the time to bring it back to life.
