🇨🇦 O Canada! We stand on guard for thee! 🇨🇦

Almost 9 years ago, we landed in Canada as refugees from Pakistan, seeking protection against religious persecution as Ahmadi Muslims. It was -33C the night we landed in Saskatoon.

This country welcomed us and gave us protection, privileges and most of all religious freedom! We were free to call ourselves Muslims, pray in our mosque and even call it a mosque. All of these rights are denied to Ahamdi Muslims in Pakistan by the constitution.

We met and were helped and supported by so many people, friends and family, who genuinely wanted to see us succeed. We tried our first poutine, first sledding experience, camping at the lake!

In 2017 we celebrated our first Canada day! Today (and earlier this month) the girls, Imran and I took our Oath of Citizenship and have officially become Canadian citizens. The journey has been long and challenging but also so rewarding. We are required to protect and love this country as part of our faith and this is a vow we don't take lightly.

And we never thought 9 years ago that we would celebrate this day with a new Canadian-born family member! 🇨🇦

"Our Mother," aims to encapsulate the life of my mother, Saeeda Khanem, a profound influence in my journey. As the first female graduate of her village in Pakistan during the 1960s, Saeeda defied societal norms at a time when girls were often limited to education up to grade 5. Her pioneering spirit has inspired not only me but also my daughters, fostering a culture of higher learning in our community.
The narrative reflects the essence of Saeeda's life, capturing moments that embody her spirit and influence. Through this project, I have tried to preserve my mother’s legacy and celebrates the stories of countless others, ensuring their voices resonate in the present and future.

Feeling so honoured, overwhelmed and proud to be a part of the art show "Unbecoming" tonight.
What started off as just another thing I said yes to, turned into such a profound life experience. The journey to get to this show tonight started decades ago and the story told tonight wasn't just mine.

Let me tell you the story of a woman....

A woman who was born on 15th of August 1950 in a small, remote village in Pakistan. She was the daughter of a landowner and the local school principal. She was the youngest of 4 brothers.

This woman was the first girl in her village to go to school further than Grade 5. She would be the only girl to study in an all-boys school and go on to achieve the highest grades in the entire district in Grade 8. She was the first girl to leave her village to study in a boarding school in a different city.

She faced the loss of her own mother at age 15. She went on to become the first woman in her village to get a Bachelor's degree and became a teacher.

She volunteered as a nurse to wounded soldiers during the wars in Pakistan. She travelled to the deserts of the UAE in the 1970's and built a life for herself and her family as the country rose around her.

This woman took on the challenge of learning how to develop film and photos at one of the first photolabs in UAE. She carried the love of photography and nature and passed it on to her children and then her grandchildren.

This woman was a teacher and administrator for over 30 years and passed on her love of lifelong learning to her kids and is now watching her grandkids graduate and study in universities in Canada.

She is my confidant, my best friend and the most courageous woman I know. A woman passionate about her faith and family. A woman I can never measure up to. My favorite breakfast partner and the person I can have the longest, most meaningful conversations with.

My Ami, my mother...Saeeda Khanem. Happy Birthday!

Happy Father's Day to the greatest man and my first love! Wouldn't be anywhere in life without you Abu!
