As a photographer, something I've been very uncomfortable with is making people pretend to do a scene.

This was taken at a workshop, so multiple photographers contributed to the set with seasoned models. And the photos look fantastic. However, I feel weird about it, because it's not genuine.

And it's the same feeling I get when people fake run around or frolic, blah blah blah. I think it's why I enjoy weddings so much.

Because we don't have time to stage a pretend scene and act it out. Like I want you back interacting with your family and friends. I want to get the candids of loved ones and the couple.

But I also want to be good at whatever this pretend scene thing is. Because sometimes people have ideas that they want to "create," and I want that for them, but I can't get over the weird feeling that it's not real. Then when I share it, it feels like a lie... cause I know how much that scene was influenced.

All that said, if you didn't know, I have these DIY couples sessions at a discounted price (sometimes even free) to help face those weird feelings and practice this element of photography.

Couples that have a concept they want to try, or sometimes I post them in my stories. Thanks for reading my rant, but that's kinda where I am at with lifestyle photography.

I had three horse-related sessions last year in my personal project folders, all of which are nearly finished.

Thank you for answering my horse-y model call, , and for being so patient as my personal projects folder got pushed back for weddings and mini sessions.

I've been sharing the archives of photographs I've taken over the years from workshops lately, because I've barely, if ever, shared them. Mainly cause I felt like they were unrealistic for the wedding day and set clients up for weird/unrealistic expectations.

But I was so proud of the work, because I learned so much, and it was good practice. Or it really was beautiful, but I could not bring myself to overshare because of the expectation of a wedding day.

Why? Most people are not that comfortable in front of a camera. So, as a photographer, making someone hold the same-ish pose while I get six different angles of it... just to "experiment"... feels like a massive waste of time on a wedding day. Like, no one has multiple hours to goof around for a couple's shoot.

And even if you do, all your loved ones are in one location for you to enjoy, so that's more important.

You enjoying your wedding day is way more critical than a styled shoot. If you want that look, you can always model, volunteer, and/or book a styled wedding shoot for yourself on a lower-stress day. Or make sure that you carve out an hour or more on the wedding day (which I have had couples do).

Remember, social media ain't always realistic.
