I've seen beaver out foraging in this area a few times this spring. It covers a fair bit of ground from their lodge traveling down a gravel road to reach another marsh. There's a well-worn path leading to where they’ve clearly been feeding for some time. I'm always surprised at how orange their front teeth are. This is a result of the iron based enamel that protects their front teeth.

I wasn't as close as it looks – I had my 100-400 lens with a 1.4 extender on which really let me zoom in on some of these shots.

Tommy Thompson Park is on the Leslie Street Spit – a peninsula created originally to support expansion of the Toronto Harbour. An area close to 500 hectares, it is now the largest area of natural habitat on the central Toronto waterfront. It also plays a critical role for wintering, nesting and migration for waterfowl and migratory birds. Here's a selection of what I found on a cool sunny day in April.

Toronto's parks and ravine systems make the city a good home for owls. Fewer natural predators for the owls, an abundance of prey for the owls and great opportunities for local photographers. Screech owls are tiny, nocturnal hunters with excellent camouflage that easily blend into their environment. As nocturnal hunters, owls need to rest during the day to ensure they are ready to hunt when the light is right. It's important to keep a distance and respect their need to rest. For photographers that means avoid crowding around their tree, get your picture and move on. Image taken January 2026. Note - Instagram forces a crop on vertical images - see today's stories for the uncropped image.
