The American Robin in March 2024, Morningside Park.

The Common Grackle just days ago, at Humber Bay—groomed, shiny, posing as if it knew.

Image: A 19th‑century drawing of a camera lucida, showing the prism that lets an artist see the subject and the paper at once.

Caption:
Today marks the anniversary of Roland Barthes’s death (26 March 1980). The title of his most personal work, Camera Lucida, comes from this little optical device. With its prism, an artist could look down and see the real world superimposed onto a blank page—tracing reality as it is.

Barthes used that idea to describe the strange magic of photography: a photograph makes the past feel present, but only as a ghost on paper. He wrote the book while grieving his mother, searching through family pictures for something he called “the air” of her.

This prism, then, is not just an antique drawing tool. It’s a figure for how we look at photographs—hoping to trace someone we love, even after they are gone.

"This triptych charts a journey in seeing. It begins with images I once overlooked—frames where human presence was an unspoken accident. The culmination is ‘Tethered Memories,’ a scene meticulously composed and digitally clarified to serve a singular narrative. Together, they trace a path to a core realization: the most potent human stories are often told not by figures, but by the spaces shaped for them—a bench, a boundary, a silent plaque holding the echo of a promise. My maturity as an artist lies in now seeking out and sculpting these eloquent, empty stages."
